Downed US Seals may have got too close to Bin Laden
Times Online ^ | 07/10/05 | Tony Allen-Mills

Posted on 07/09/2005 4:48:49 PM PDT by Warriormom

THE first sign of trouble was a radio message requesting immediate extraction. A four-man team of US Navy Seal commandos had run into heavy enemy fire on a remote, thickly forested trail in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

Forgive the ignorance...

Would these Seals' wives (if any) have known about this mission? and if not, when would they be notified re: their husband's status?

I'd imagine the SEAL's wives would know that their husbands are deployed to a certain theater, but no more.

Once they are officially "missing", the wives are told, I'd imagine. As to those who died, the wives are told as soon as possible, and NO information is released to the public until the families are notified.

As to discussing these issues on a public forum, I get
all I know about these types of operations, little as it is, from other publicly available sources. (Books, etc.)

Pure speculation. Not worth the article, IMHO.

It has also opened an intriguing new front in the coalition’s battle against terrorism.

Just opened? What was has this dude been watching?

I've known a number of SEALs and I can assure you, there is no way their wives had any idea what they were doing. SEAL training is not just physical, it is also about completely breaking down the trainee mentally in order to "rebuild" his thought processes. The SEAL mental training is based upon absolute loyalty, primarily to their "swim buddy" and secondarily to the team. The fact is that a lot of SEALs go through divorce or never marry in the first place because their wives and girlfriends often feel resentful about the SEAL being more emotionally attached to other SEALs.

"Not to second guess, but why only a 4 man unit?"

Recon teams are small. Less noticeable.

Read the story from the thread I posted last night on Lt. Murphy. His parents had no idea where he was. His mother had a premonition that her son was one of the missing and called the Navy.

As she was calling the Navy, they were enroute to their house to tell them of his passing.

Truly sad.

Here's the link.

"...FReeper Churchillbuff says..."

He can also recite whole chapters of Michael Moore's books, perfectly lip synch to Moore's movies and spout Charlie Rangle BS without even blushing.

He's very talented.

Thank you for the link---

I hadn't seen that thread.

It seems like he got his "unassuming" ways from his parents..they seemed like good people just from that article.

God Bless him and his family!!! Rest in Peace, sir.

I agree. It bothers me that 4 were anywhere without backup.

I'm not a military expert by any means but I suspect this is exactly how this group of four is trained to operate.

Stealth...

Intelligence or execution squad.

I seem to recall a movie-type documentary about the beginning of the Afghan war where two of the CIA special ops were dropped into Afghanistan dressed in traditional garb. One guy walked through town in Taliban country and met with a tribal elder they thought could be trusted. His buddy stayed up on a ridge above town and watched.

deeply mourn all those who were lost.

I certainly mourn the loss of any American or innocent for that matter but I suspect the loss of these 4 represents a great loss to our military.

These 4 most likely have had years and countless dollars spend on their training and cannot be easily replaced.

God bless them and their families.
