THE first sign of trouble was a radio message requesting immediate extraction. A four-man team of US Navy Seal commandos had run into heavy enemy fire on a remote, thickly forested trail in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

These probably weren't the only 4 men - I would imagine there were other teams. These brave men got caught - but the others are still out there, and I hope Binnie and his boyz are shaking in their flip-flops.
Saw a Cspan forum a few nights ago, with a guy claiming OBL was residing in Tribal area of Pakistan, under protection of local chiefs and lower ranking ISI.
Or there is another Special Ops team burrowed in deep up in those mountains....lasing targets.
That would be good.
I have wondered about this mission since the Chinook went down, I figured there was something of very high value the small team was going after. I hope we learn the details sometime soon. I salute the one who survived and deeply mourn all those who were lost.
Please oh Lord let us get him.
Let these brave men's couterparts get this wicked animal.
Amen.
That tribal area is right across the border from this region the Seals were lost.
A larger group is more easily detected.
It's what they do.
Seal teams tend to operate in smaller batches like this, particularly for insertion and recon.
Sneaky Peaches (Green Berets (man that nick name dates me, doesn't it?)) operate in slightly larger "A" teams at the sharp end and "B" teams providing logistics and support. Force Recon and Rangers tend to operate at the next larger unit sizes.
And you are second guessing them. If it were safe then just anyone would be doing it.
The notion that a warrior must be kept safe at all costs is insane. "Going in harms way" is the nature of the calling. If you think that all of them are coming home hale and hearty then you don't understand the concept.
It's called WAR. I guarantee you that Osama's boys aren't out there clamoring for upgraded armor on their vehicles. It's about breaking things and killing the other guy, not about being safe.
As in stealth?
Yes I misspelled it.
That is what these guys do...recon...special ops...etc.
Sounds to me like they may have been found (unlikely) or stumbled into a hornet's nest.

The amazing thing will be, when all is said and done, I'm betting OBL will have committed suicide moments before being nabbed by U.S. Forces. Despite all the rhetoric on martyrdom - I'm betting he takes himself out.
Man, this would be outstanding to snag the chief raghead. Although the war on terror would go on, this would be a hugh dent in the camel's ass to have Bin Laden's head on a stick. Oooraaaaahhhh...get some!
Time for some MOABs to carpet bomb the place.
aahh...okay
4 man team is for long range recon. The members of the team are chosen for which special skills they bring to the mission. The rapid reaction force (chinook squad) is kept at the ready to react if extraction needed, or to attack viable target if one is found.
Let's not discuss this and possible details too openly on a public forum, ok?
That makes plenty of sense. I am greatly in awe of these men.
From what I heard about the enemy fire they took on, I can't help but think they had hit upon a significant enemy threshold.
