Is Charles Gibson watching ABC News too much? On Wednesday's World News Tonight, after Brian Ross noted that "some Arabs" on a "popular Web site said they hoped the news was true" about the serious injury to terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, with messages such as, "Let this criminal Zarqawi go to Hell," Gibson turned to reporter Nick Watt in Baghdad and expressed shock, "I'm surprised by something in Brian's piece: The vehemence of the comments on Arab Web sites in opposition to Zarqawi, because we keep hearing that he has considerable support." Watt confirmed that "many" Iraqis "will be very glad if he does die."
In the lead story on the may 25 World News Tonight, Brian Ross reported, over video of a computer screen: "Some Arabs on this popular Web site said they hoped the news was true. 'Let this criminal Zarqawi go to Hell,' wrote one. 'God curse him alive or dead to Hell,' wrote another.'"
Professor Fawaz Gerges, Sarah Lawrence College: "Most of those who are killed in Iraq are basically Iraqis. And it seems to me both the Iraqi public and some major insurgence groups in Iraq basically do not really care for Zarqawi."
Following Ross, Gibson went to Nick Watt in Baghdad: "Nick, I'm surprised by something in Brian's piece. The vehemence of the comments on Arab Web sites in opposition to Zarqawi because we keep hearing that he has considerable support."
Watt: "Well, Charlie, these men who come to Iraq to fight and die, they do represent the real extreme end of Islamic thinking. They represent a very small portion of the Muslim population. And they come here seeking martyrdom. They come, they say, to fight the infidel, to fight the U.S. Army, which they say is occupying an Islamic country."
Gibson: "But then, if there's such a small number of supporters for him and there's a $25 million bounty on his head, it seems surprising someone hasn't turned him in."
Watt: "Well, Charlie, it is a lot of money, but most Iraqis are petrified to give up any information about the insurgents, scared they'll be killed. Also, Zarqawi's network is based to the north and the west of Baghdad, where the insurgency is its most powerful and also its most popular. But, Charlie, Iraqis might not have turned him in, but many of them will be very glad if he does die."
ABC news anchor Gibson then goes on to scratch his head in amazement at this new discovery on the lack of popularity of Zarqawi and questions:
"But then, if there's such a small number of supporters for him and there's a $25 million bounty on his head, it seems surprising someone hasn't turned him in."
Back in 2000, Meir Amit, a former director-general of Mossad, said a tactic such as placing a "bounty" on the head of terrorists leaders (such as bin Laden here)does not often work.
"Betrayal for money is a hard thing to induce in someone committed to a terrorist leader. Part of the reason is fear of someone discovering the treachery. Part of the reason is that the leader has picked his men with care."
Logic says, Charlie, that the Iraqi people wish no individual attention; and being cast in the media limelight with a winning " Zarqawi-megabuck's" ticket is not condusive to a long and healthy life.
and there are people who get their news from this dimwit...
"The vehemence of the comments on Arab Web sites in opposition to Zarqawi, because we keep hearing that he has considerable support."
What Gibson meant was "because we keep telling the American people he has considerable support." Which I'm sure is true in the circles Charlie Gibson travels in.
Gee Chuck, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his minions have killed thousands of Iraqi men, women and children through terrorist acts. Why would they hate him?
Didn't any of these bozos watch the Wizard of Oz? The Oreo men acted all lovey-dovey to the wicked witch til she was dead and then they sang their song. Of course, these guys want this wicked man dead.
The blind leading the blind!
(No offense to blind people!)
Gibson might also be surprised to know what people think of him.
I think it was on Special Report last night, but there were several (translated/voiced-over) interviews with Iraqis on the street and they all said the same thing: they want the Iraqi-killer dead.
It doesn't fit Charlie's mode of thinking - that the US is the bad guy, the world is against us & that anybody opposing us must be loved by all the world. He must think that he represents the enlightened here in the US fighting the good fight. What a warped mind these types are saddled with - pining for the 1960's.
It's a brave, but dangerous, new world, Charlie, how about getting back up to speed?
Who is "Charles Gibson"?
I have never heard of him.

Terrorists aren't popular, what revelation.
As has been said, liberals like him are so far disconnected from reality that they simply cannot comprehend that everyone doesn't think like they do.
A natural mistake. Gibson obviously meant that Zarqawi has considerable support at ABC, not in Iraq.
Media mind exposed!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One thing to think about - if this guy does die (martyr) and he gets his 72 virgins, they come with 72 mother-in-laws.
"Gibson Surprised To Learn Most Americans Outside NYC Hate His Guts" !!
Don't they like it when he blows up their grandmothers and their children?
What a buffoon.
mindless, that is......
