MARIETTA, Ga. — Complying with a judge's order, workers in Cobb County (search) have begun removing controversial evolution disclaimer stickers from science textbooks. By the end of the day Monday, several thousand stickers, which said evolution (search) was a theory and not a fact, had been scraped off. The school district had placed 34,452 stickers on textbooks across the county. The evolution disclaimers read: "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered."

Sounds like yet another case of our judiciary overruling anything which might be left of our democracy.

Does it really matter what government schools are or are not "teaching" or whether there are disclaimers on text books? The only thing your child really needs to know to get through a government school is when to duck, when to jab and when to run.

And, who is to blame for the court ruling that led to this? Republicans that refuse to do what is necessary to appoint and get up or down votes on "strict Constitutionalist" judges.

Whenever we see rulings like this we need to think of John McCain, Lindsay Graham, Mike DeWine, John Warner, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe and Lincoln Chaffee. Judicial tyranny is alive and well because of those Senators.

Nothing is changing until such Republicans are exterminated from the Senate.

The following oral tradition contains material on creation. Creation is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered."

Norse Creation Story

In the beginning there was the void. And the void was called Ginnungagap. What does Ginnungagap mean? Yawning gap, beginning gap, gap with magical potential, mighty gap; these are a few of the educated guesses. Along with the void existed Niflheim the land of fog and ice in the north and Muspelheim the land of fire in the south. There seems to be a bit of confusion as to whether or not these existed after Ginnungagap or along side of it from the beginning.

In Niflheim was a spring called Hvergelmir from which the Elivagar (eleven rivers - Svol, Gunnthra, Fiorm, Fimbulthul, Slidr, Hrid, Sylg, Ylg, Vid, Leiptr, and Gioll) flowed. The Elivargar froze layer upon layer until it filled in the northerly portion of the gap. Concurrently the southern portion was being filled by sparks and molten material from Muspelheim.

The mix of fire and ice caused part of the Elivagar to melt forming the figures Ymir the primeval giant and the cow Audhumla. The cow's milk was Ymir's food. While Ymir slept his under arm sweat begat two frost giants, one male one female, while his two legs begat another male.

While Ymir was busy procreating Audhumla was busy eating. Her nourishment came from licking the salty ice. Her incessant licking formed the god Buri. He had a son named Bor who was the father of Odin, Vili, and Ve.

For some reason the sons of Bor decided to kill poor Ymir. His blood caused a flood which killed all of the frost giants except for two, Bergelmir and his wife, who escaped the deluge in their boat.

Odin, Vili, and Ve put Ymir's corpse into the middle of ginnungagap and created the earth and sky from it. They also created the stars, sun, and moon from sparks coming out of Muspelheim.

Finally, the brothers happened upon two logs lying on the beach and created the first two humans Ask [Ash] and Embla [vine?] from them.

What religious message was contained on the stickers? One could be an atheist and still believe that the claims that mankind is decended from primordial ooze are bogus.

Exactly what is wrong with the stickers? They don't call the theory of evolution a lie or wrong - they just suggest that the material be studied carefully and considered well. Nothing wrong with it, nothing "religion-pushing" about it, and doesn't include the word "God".

I don't understand.... I guess it's just more legislation from the bench.

The power of concerned parents.

How about the power of activist judges who react to those who complain and rule according to their ideology?

Never mind evolution vs. creation, what basis did the judge have for ruling that the stickers must be removed?

I agree. The courts have really overstepped their bounds on this one. Cobb County was exactly right, evolution IS a theory. It has never been proven, because it is not continuing or repeating itself. Any good scientific FACT can be duplicated over and over. Seems to be like some parents got to the judge.

Creation was never mentioned on the stickers. It stated the facts.

Georgia should tell the judges to remove the stickers themselves if it offends them so bad.

I hear ya. I've heard it said that just because a judge says something doesn't mean he can enforce it. So as you say, tell him to go pull the stickers.

Should there be similar stickers for plate tectonics or black holes? They're "just" theories too.

Not that it matters much, but today there was an earlier thread on this topic, with a very different title: Un-du and a putty knive removes slap at evolution.

I guess the questioning of evolution has now become heresy.

it boggles my mind that in this day and age some people still do not believe in the theory of evolution. absolutely incredible.

it boggles my mind that in this day and age some people still do not believe in the theory of evolution. absolutely incredible.

It is readily apparent that some of the biodiversity on this planet is the result of Darwinian mechanics; indeed, a little of it has come into existence during recorded history. That does not in any way, however, imply that humanity developed from amorphous protoplasm as evolution's proponents would suggest.

People who present evolution as fact fail to recognize an important scientific and historical principle: the fact that a particular set of initial conditions would produce results consistent with observed reality does not imply that such initial conditions ever actually existed. Other initial conditions might have produced similar results.

For example, suppose I were to posit that life on this planet is decended from a race of extra-terrestrials which sent a space ship that landed in an area that has since become a volcano. What evidence exists that would be less consistent with that theory than with the theory of evolution?

The theory of Evolution also discounts the possibility (or reality in my belief) that the changes that have occurred in species in recorded history could be due to the divine hand of God adapting those creatures to survive (or to become extinct).

For some rather interesting views on the subject see:

http://www.answersingenesis.org/

And before anyone automatically discounts the site because of the obvious biblical/Christian viewpoint - just check out the evidence and arguments presented historical fact and record. Some pretty good explanations as well as some pretty convincing arguments.
