That is unless the parents tell the school you don't have the money to feed the kids, then they get it for free. A lot of the kids get free breakfast and lunch around here when the parents can darn well afford to feed them, all they have to do is sign them up and let the state pay for it. They feel if they can get it for free then it is their right to do it, they have no guilt at all.

You make it sound like it's the states money. We should never deprive the state of their money to feed some worthless kids.

I would like to think there are some checks and balances and it takes more than a parent just saying they can't afford to feed their kids but I'm probably wrong on that account.

I'd rather the state spend some money feeding kids than some of the other stuff they spend money on.

I totally agree with you, no kid should ever go hungry. I am just saying that the abuse of the system is rampant, my wife works at our kids school and sees it all the time. The kids live in a 200K+ house and yet get free breakfast and lunch because the parents know how to work the system. I would gladly pay more for taxes if it went to a hungry child, but I expect the system to have some oversight, and at our school there doesn't seem to be very much.
