Eight middle school students are in trouble for using a color copier in their science class to make copies of one-and-five dollar bills.
Officials at Wilkerson Middle School said the incident happened Tuesday. The regular teacher was absent and a substitute teacher was in the room. A Birmingham police officer who was on campus saw a student handing copies to other students. The bogus money was seized and the U.S. Secret Service was notified.
School personnel who saw the copied dollars said they looked real. None of the students, however, attempted to spend the fake money.
The eight students, all seventh-graders, were suspended and they face additional disciplinary action including assignment to alternative school and expulsion.
Don't miss the tagline back there.
It was only 25% sarcasm because my two middle-schoolers have no need of $5 cash at school. Our school cafeteria doesn't require cash. (I'm not even sure they'd accept cash.) Each student has an account which is replenished with a check every so often.
I'm not saying that's the only way or the 'right' way, just that it's my way.
(Because you asked. ;-)
Right on.
Best post of the thread.
Oh man!!! What ever happened to fun????
Can't kids just photocopy their butts like the old days??? :)
""In some schools in IN without POP and snacks the meals push $5""
That is unless the parents tell the school you don't have the money to feed the kids, then they get it for free. A lot of the kids get free breakfast and lunch around here when the parents can darn well afford to feed them, all they have to do is sign them up and let the state pay for it. They feel if they can get it for free then it is their right to do it, they have no guilt at all.
Thats pretty smart.
I didn't know that they do that at the younger levels yet.
My college did have that system, but they also took cash.
>Reminds me of the Beavis and Butthead episode where they were spending $0.10 a copy to make paper nickels.<
My first thought after reading the headline.....funny how the store clerk wouldn't take the money, and they ever so slyly passed him another 'dollar' or so and said: "Here, maybe this will change your mind."
LMAO!!
Well why not make paper funny money. The govt does.
A very acute observation.
U.S. Code Title 18, Part I, Ch. 25, Sec. 471
Whoever, with intent to defraud, falsely makes, forges, counterfeits, or alters any obligation or other security of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.
This makes it illegal to create counterfeit money.

This makes it illegal to hand out counterfeit money.
U.S. Code Title 18, Part I, Ch. 25, Sec. 472

This makes it illegal to possess, use, or sell counterfeit money.
Where? $10.00 per week won't get the job done here anymore.
Yes, it most certainly is! If you photocopy money, you have to either shrink or enlarge it. Copying money is counterfeiting. It doesn't even matter if you do it on a black and white copier. It is illegal. Period.
Read an article awhile back that said the newer scanners are made to detect money and will not scan them. Never tried, so not sure how true this is.
That sounds sexist. What about mothering their education? If you want to be liberal, go the whole way.
Around here, you go online and charge it to your credit card.
My wife checks the account balances and transactions online. But, I doubt our school system is willing to give a piece of the action to the credit card companies. (Besides, the staff members who handle the checks need to eat, too. ;)
Well, I guess it isn't so bad here in VA then...
Nice research but it says nothing about Federal Reserve Notes which by defination are obligations of the Federal Reserve Bank which is not part of the US gov.
