DCF: Schiavo Not Abused Or Exploited
The Associated Press ^ | April 16, 2005

Posted on 04/16/2005 8:15:30 AM PDT by kingattax

TAMPA, Fla. -- State investigators found no evidence that Terri Schiavo had been abused or exploited by either side of her family, according to documents released by Florida's Department of Children and Families.

The agency investigated 89 complaints dating back to 2001, when Schiavo's feeding tube was removed for the first time and the legal battle surrounding her right-to-die case intensified.

The calls alleged that the brain-damaged woman was being mistreated by her husband and her parents for financial gain. One complaint alleged that Schiavo's parents were selling videos of her through a Web site; another said Schiavo's husband wasn't spending money intended for her rehabilitation.

But investigators said they found no evidence that either her husband or parents were exploiting her, and often noted in their records that they found Schiavo well cared for on their visits to her Pinellas Park hospice.

The agency released the records Friday under court order.

Schiavo, 41, died last month after her feeding tube was removed for the third time, ending a bitter court battle between her husband, Michael Schiavo, and parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, over whether she would have wanted to live in a vegetative state.

The repeated allegations of abuse were based partly on bone scans showing Terri Schiavo suffered fractures and statements she made to family and friends that she was unhappy in her marriage.

Schiavo's husband has denied harming his wife. His lawyer said the fractures resulted from osteoporosis caused by the woman's years of immobility and complications of her medication.

Robert Schindler declined to comment there on the release of the DCF documents. An attorney for Michael Schiavo did not immediately return calls

Nice try at a switch ... the topic is the accuracy of medical information as it is verifiable with other evidence. But you again try to impeach the doctors who don't fit with your preconceived verdict ... and it is becoming very obvious that you support the execution of Terri Schiavo so far as it allows you to berate Freepers you deem too uneducated to know better than to protest the wrongs done to Terri by a process judicial absent due process according to our Constitution. And since you have an obsession for 'last wordism', I'll sign off from responding to you any further so you can feel successful with your posts.

That is explained in GAL reports and some of the court testimony.

It is common for massive stroke victims, for example, not to be able to swallow food or water, but they are able to swallow their own saliva.

Google PVS; some of those links describe it as well.

Did you read any of the GAL reports? The 2002 Court testimony? EEG's are referred to. Her last one (and she had multiple EEGs) was in 2002. Her neurologists and doctors discussed them in court testimony.

I never said she didn't have a feeding tube from 1990 on. After the third swallow test, it was recommended the testing be discontinued.

We seem to often talk at cross purposes. The links to information you wish to read have been posted many, many times, Cboldt. Check it out and let me know what you find.

You would think this would be good news, but the crowd here wants to believe that she was abused, so they attack AP, and start forming conspiracy theories.

Yep, remember when people thought and debated facts, instead of this?

Guessed I missed it. Besides, that isn't the point for me. It was cruel for MS to do that to a wife he still loved. Plus, I don't think he could look at it objectively anymore since he had broken those vows years ago. He had too much to gain and I think he should have been removed long ago as her guardian or whatever he was. In fact, if he was any kind of man, he would have walked away from it, divorced Terri and let her parents care for her until God chose to take her home.

No, a flat EEG would not necessarily be a cadaver.

There are two regions of the brain that EEG's test. I've forgotten which is which but one (top or bottom) controls breathing and if that one is flat, you are indeed dead.

The other controls other stuff and that is the one that Terri had. For example, massive stroke victims with no brain activity are indeed breathing on their own. But they can't do anything else. They have no cognitive abilities, etc. Sometimes. Many kinds of strokes, of course.

You will note that Peach offers the following to you as if it were some court record yet it is only the assertion of Michael Schiavo she is offering: "Mr. Schindler thought he was entitled to some of that $$ and they argued over the $$." Says a lot about what Peach uses for authority to support her preceonceived notions.

ah ha! That was one thing I wondered about. The 15 glasses of tea a day could have caused Electrolyte abnormalities.

Just as it does to anyone who drinks alot of water.

I think Mr. Schindler saw him squanering $$ on his new "wife" and kids and felt he was not using it to protect his daughter. As a mother, I can relate.

The difference is that Scott Peterson was judged to be guilty and deserving of a death sentence by "a jury of his peers."

He had twelve people he could have convinved of his innocence.

Terri was sentenced do death on the say so of a probate court judge. Not a jury.

Btw, I'm not an Evangelical Christian.

It doesn't take anyone being an Evangelical Christian or even a excessively religious peron to know right from wrong if they have a moral compass, a conscience and aren't a sociopath.

To me, religion doesn't even enter into this. It is always wrong to murder an innocent person. That's the bottom line.

I think he did hit her before the accident.....hence why she was scared of him. But, it is possible he didn't after the accident.

Hon. Buy a clue. I've offered more court links to this matter than Carter has little pills.

If you don't like what the under oath testimony says, take it up with the doctors.

And I guess you didn't know that under oath the Schindlers admitted they were upset they didn't get any of the malpractice money?

And under oath the Schindlers admitted that up until the malpractice money was given to Michael, they thought he was a fantastic son in law.

And under oath the Schindlers admitted they advised Michael it was time to get a life and get a girlfriend and they wanted to meet the future girlfriends and remain close.

And under oath the Schindlers admitted they knew Terri as PVS.

But ignore the under oath stuff from little people like doctors who actually treated her.

And believe instead the gossip and unsourced crap on the internet. People who we don't even know are real doctors. It's so much more titillating and fun, right?

I'll say.. can you imagine the force it took to break a 26 year old's femur. That's the biggest thickest bone in a human body.

The links to information you wish to read have been posted many, many times, Cboldt. Check it out and let me know what you find.

I hadn't (and haven't) seen a relatively uninterrupted series of reports from 1990 to 2005. I do appreciate your confirnation that Terri was never fed, other than a feeding tube, from 1990 to 2005.

I never said she didn't have a feeding tube from 1990 on.

And I never put those words in your mouth. The evidence I was trying to obtain was the UNINERRUPTED nature of the method of feeding, not whether she had one in 1990, or whether she had one in 2005. When the question is in relation to the UNINTERRUPTED nature of method of feeding, an answer that she had a feeding tube in 1990, and she had a feeding tube in 2005 is not fully responsive.

Now, given three swallaow tests, about a year apart, and the first one coming in 1990 or 1991, and no attempts at mouth feeding following the last of three swallow test, we create an uninterrupted chronology, which is what I asked about in the first place. I think the following list represents the cronology as you see it.
