There are countries in the region who want to change the name to
The Arabian Gulf, of course Iran (Persia), wants no part of the change.
The Persian Gulf was completely dry during the Ice Age...as was the Red Sea.

Persian Gulf, Arabian Gulf... who gives a rat's patootie?
It is just a freeking toilet surrounded by various IslamoFascist hellholes, and populated by homicidal sub-humans practicing the Shi'ite and Wahabi sects of their horror-show moonbat excuse for a religion.

There should be respect for the historical name of the Persian Gulf. Allowing it to change for political reasons is an unwise thing, for it marks the introduction of Bolshevik methods into geography. Using the ideologically nonsensical term "IslamoFascist" also is a reflection of Bolshevik tendencies.

I don't presume to speak for blam, but he/she posts items of archeological interest. That is the point of this as opposed to some political position.

Does that mean that Iran wants to become Persia again and get rid of the Arab-inspired theocracy? For that matter does that mean that they are interested in denouncing the Arab-inspired cult of Muhammed?

I think the Iranian govt has a decided inferiority complex.
They are constantly screaming, "Look here! Look here at what we've done!"

It is ironic that the Iranians are so persistent about maintaining the name Persian gulf while referring to themselves not as Persians but Iranians.

Thanks Blam, I'll ping the list later. These source maps are just a bit more than 400 years old, so it's not very compelling. Herodotus traveled in the Persian Empire and referred to the Gulf as being part of the Erythraean Sea, however, I'm a little short of online Herodotus, so that's as far as I go. Please FREEPMAIL me if you want on, off, or alter the "Gods, Graves, Glyphs" PING list --

A map produced in 1584, the year of the first attempt to start a colony at Roanoke Island, hardly proves that the name (Persian Gulf) was always used. Civilization was about 5,000 years old by then. The map says that the body of water was "olim Sinus Persicos" meaning formerly the Persian Gulf.

the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that researches made by the Romanian academy uncovered a map called "Asiac Nova Descripto" dating back to 1584 in which the Persian Gulf is historically referred to as "Mar Mesendin Ol Sinus Persicus."But... But... Was it created with Microsoft Word?
