Somne of your source on this one is fanciful. A 160 lb bow of any sort would be of use only to our strongest modern athletes, if that. There was nobody alive in the middle ages capable of pulling a 160 lb. bow and there sure as hell has never been anybody light enough to ride horses and strong enough to pull a hundred and sixty pound bow. Figure about 80 or 90 lbs, absolute tops.

Aside from that, the idea of women riding in a mongol army is ludicrous. Mongol women stayed home and raised mongol kids.

Yes, Mongol women learned to use the bow. So did Samurai women.

Many people would admire the two swords the head of household might have on display in his home after the custom of his ancestors, but how many would even notice grandmother's bow in the corner?

How To Be Unpopular

Read: Jeremiah 23:16-23

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture! —Jeremiah 23:1

Bible In One Year: Daniel 5-7; 2 John

In 1517, Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg. Luther became known as a reformer, and we remember his bold stand as a turning point in church history.

The fiery priest demonstrated great courage in expressing outrage at the church's practice of selling forgiveness through indulgences, which allowed the people to sin intentionally in exchange for money.

Luther's passion to stop these practices did not make him popular with the religious authorities of his day. In fact, his efforts resulted in a series of attempts to silence him.

Long before Luther, the prophet Jeremiah felt the power of God's Word in his heart "like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not" (Jeremiah 20:9). Jeremiah and Luther refused to allow God's truth to be compromised.

Living for God is about grace and forgiveness, but it's also about boldly standing for the truth. Having God's Word in our heart doesn't always result in warm, pleasant feelings. Sometimes His truth becomes a blazing fire that causes us to challenge corruption—even though we may be attacked for it. —Julie Ackerman Link

Sure I must fight if I would reign;
Increase my courage, Lord.
I'll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by Thy Word. —Watts

It's better to declare the truth and be rejected than to withhold it just to be accepted.

In addition to the limbs, Mongol compound bows had "ears" at each end, to which the bowstring attached. These added further tension when the bow was drawn, giving it more power.

Mongol bows were held together with a glue made from fish bladders, which were waterproof. The glue was also used on the wrap used on both limbs, such as birch bark, which added to the moisture resistance. Despite their power, Mongol bows were fairly short ( a requirement for a horse archer, deriving all their power from the construction materials and manufacturing techniques). They were fired in a different manner than western bows, with the arrows placed on the side of the grip away from the hand holding the bow, and with the use of a thumb ring on the on the hand pulling the bow. Mongol success with the bow in battle was the result of three factors: years of hunting, the gait of the Mongol horse, which even at a gallop allowed a rider using short stirrups to fire from a stable platform, and lethal use of the "arrow storm" technique.

Mongol armor piercing arrowheads were reportedly tempered in salt water to make them harder, and the heads came in various shapes. Like the Parthians centuries before them, Mongol ordus went to war with wagonloads of spare arrows. The 60 arrows referred to by Chambers were their "basic load", and readily, and frequently, replaced.

Today's FEEBLE

YOKE :

A very new and nervous school inspector was being shown 'round a very rough school.

Just as the tour of inspection was coming to an end, the principal asked him if he'd mind saying a few words of advice to a class of unruly 16 year olds, who were going to leave school at the end of term.

The principal managed to get the kids to be quiet, introduced them to the inspector and told them that he was going to say a few words to them.

The poor man was totally nonplussed by the sight of unwelcoming faces staring at him, but he took a deep breath and began: "When y-y-y-you were in-in-infants I'm sure you enjoyed your in-in-infancy."

"As ch-ch-children I'm sure you enjoyed y-y-y-your ch-ch-childhood."

"I c-c-c-can see that you are enjoying your a-a-a-a-adolescence and I h-h-hope that w-w-when you leave school and become adults, you will enjoy your adultery."

Greetings, Canteeners,
FReepers, Troops,
and All the Ships at Sea!

And here's the dawn report for Day Nine of Sarge's Most Excellent Adventure! After a hearty breakfast of coffee and computer, Sarge will head in to The Haunted Armory.

We got part of our map load yesterday. We get to see the first look at our new AO. Right from the get-go, Sarge went to work on the maps - meticulous stuff...

Our other full-timers are busy prepping things for the SRP, and there will probably be a VTC with our new partners, before we meet up at mob-station. About half of the kids are either off at school, or have been on missions before, like me. Which means, we're already prepared to go someplace; it'll cut down on the workload.

Oh, and one funny note? Sarge did pretty well at the TA-50 shakedown this last drill. Sarge only owed the government $3.92 (for a lost pair of suspenders). Not bad for an old guy who forgets stuff, right?

Sarge will be in the area all day, so Let's Have Fun!

SARGE

DISCLAIMER: If you wish to be on/off Sarge's Canteen Daily Report, FReepmail with details!

Good morning, troops!

Excellent tribute to Pearl Harbor and our WWII vets. After 9/11, my father-in-law became quite upset because he felt people were forgetting "the first time something like this happened." I reassured him we had not forgotten and never would.

Did I miss anything yesterday? We had a little problem caused by the interaction between a racoon and some power lines so we shut down early after fumbling around in the dark for a while.

Good morning Everyone. Good morning to our

Military, our Allies and their families.

First thing is to thank DivaLoca for her continued support to the Canteen. Even during her busy time.

Second, for the next two days I will only be doing a drive-by posting. I will be having what I hope to be my final exam this Wednesday and will be spending every minute in-between work practicing for the exam (to ensure every chance that it is my final). Forgive me if you post something to me and I do not answer right away. If there is anything you need my immediate attention on, please FReepmail me.

Next, to all my morning FRiends whom I usually converse with every morning, please forgive me if I don't get a chance today or tomorrow. I hope to make it up to you on Thursday.

And, to all newcomers and lurkers........WELCOME.

Remembering Pearl Harbor, 9/11 or ALL those who have fallen.

Finally,

Now remember, the Canteen is always open

So, come on in and sit for a while. There's alway plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS.
