but when there is truth to the charge, it is not merely "rumor."

Since the Templars died out in the 14th Century and left no descendants, I think you're wrong.

That's my understanding too - that the French King had trumped up charges regarding the occult and homosexuality brought against the Knights Tempalr in order to destroy them and their reputation.

Maybe. I think they started the rumors because they feared the growing power and wealth of the Templars. The Templars had it's own entrenched beauracracy and had outlived it's original purpose. The church felt it was time for them to go and they resisted.
