A siege in The Hague is reported to have ended after a stand-off between Dutch police and terror suspects, during which shots were fired. Three police officers were wounded in a grenade explosion earlier during the raid. Two of them remain in hospital.

An unconfirmed report says two young men have surrendered to police.

WOW! The Dutch among other Europeans are realizing that they have to start dealing with terrorism? Go figure!

Just wait: I guess they'll get something like two months. On parole. Then, they'll sue the government for police brutality and get ten million Euros in compensation for pain and suffering.

She [the Dutch Immigration Minister, Rita Verdonk] said member states must act urgently to improve the integration of foreigners.

Rita, you are mistaken if you believe that European governments aren't doing enough to integrate these people. The problem, which you refuse to acknowledge, is that they don't want to be integrated. It doesn't matter how many "incentives" your governments offer. These immigrants hate your culture and want to make it more like the ones in their home countries. And they will kill you to make it happen.

The terrorists are escalating their attacks on the Dutch on Dutch homeland. Have the Dutch taken off their rose-colored lenses on their glasses yet?

As far as I can tell, they have troops in afghanistan and are giving support to the coalition in Iraq. I don't know that the Dutch have ever buried thier heads in the sand in the first place. Of all of the countries I have visited, I believe they may be the only country that values freedom as much as the USA. They are not hawkish, but they are free, and certainly less likely to bow to the will of the EU.

I agree, the Dutch had a strong resistance movement during WWII and I'm sure they're starting to take back their country.

What I can never understand is why, if they hate our culture, do the come here, knowing that our culture is not like their home country. However, if they are leaving their home country, it would seem that they don't really like the culture there either. When you move to a country, and they allow you to live there, implicit in that is the fact that you are agreeing to abide by their customs, and respect their culture. After all it is their choice to live there. If the country doesn't share your views, there are plenty of other countries that do, go there!

Some come here because they dislike the culture of their home countries and want to escape oppression, but many more come here simply because they like the money that they can make here. They'd never leave their countries of origin if they could make the same money there that they can make here. What they don't seem to realize is that part of the reason why Americans are so wealthy in comparison to most of the rest of the world is because of our culture.

This is an important point. However, how should they know? Many foreigners coming to Western countries come to study in our universities. What they are taught there is that the only reason the West is so rich is that we "exploit" and "oppress" everybody else. And believing this version is of course much more flattering to them. Who is to blame them? If we can't even teach our own children what's great about Western civilization and culture anymore, then why should anybody else have any respect for it?

I agree that we should do a much better job in teaching our own children about the positive nature of American culture. But I have no sympathy for immigrants who are willing to live in a place that they believe is Hell on Earth because they want money. My husband is in the military. He has skills that would garner him a very high paying job in Saudi Arabia. But we would not be willing to live in a country whose culture we despise.

I am tired of our country being blamed for all of the world's ills, but I am so angry at the injustices that we've had to endure that I don't have any desire to try to convince them that they are wrong. Let them hate us.

I just looked at your profile and discovered that you are German. I want you to know that I don't feel any animosity for individual Europeans. It's your governments and media that I have a problem with.

That's ok, thank you! Be assured that I've got a major problem with my government myself :-p

I'm curious about something. How do average Germans feel about George Bush being re-elected?

Good question. From what I can see, nobody seems to care very much, strangely. Perhaps this is because it didn't come as a big surprise to anyone -- unlike yours, our media generally predicted a Bush win. Journalists didn't make a big thing of it, either. I saw some panel discussions where some people argued for Bush, some against Bush, but nobody got all excited about it like in the American or British media. Our government has cut down on the anti-American propaganda, too. Apparently, they used it as a desperate measure to win the last election, but now they'd like to have better relations with Washington, again. I have even heard a government official explain to a leftist journalist that the people in the Bush administration are actually "extremely intelligent and capable policy analysts" and how unfortunate it was that so many people in Germany mistook Michael Moore's "caricatural image" of America for a fact.

As for people on the street, the only one I've heard even talking about the election was my father. He was very pleased that Bush won. So was I. So was our biggest newspaper, Bild, and our best newspaper, the Frankfurter Allgemeine. Nobody else seems to care much.

Gee, it is too bad the MSM can't break away from their glorification of Arafat long enough to report on what is going on in Holland.

Very interesting. What do you think will happen to Germany's relationship with France if your government tries to rebuild it's relationship with the US?

Heh. I guess they'll try to keep good relations with both :-) Now, what they're going to do in case they have to choose sides is the interesting question...I wish I knew the answer :-)
