Monday, August 30, 2004 RUMOR: MCCAIN TO REPLACE CHENEY? Bill Kristol was just on FoxNews irresponsibly disseminating a rumor that he began the previous day on FoxNews Sunday with Brit Hume. Since I love the rumor and fervently wish for its accuracy, it is my pleasure, nay my responsibility, to continue its irresponsible dissemination.
Reading the tea-leaves, Kristol has concluded that McCain might be poised to replace Cheney on the ticket. Heres the logic: After his convention speech tonight, McCain is flying out to New Mexico to hook up with the President and introduce him to the American Legion convention and then hes going to travel with the President to Nashville. Kristol wonders what could possibly occasion this flurry of McCain activity. He speculates that Bush and McCain could make an announcement together in New Mexico and then later in the week triumphantly wing their way back to New York.
Kristol also perceives a couple of other portents. For the last several weeks, Dick Cheney has been pretty much playing Tupper-ware parties in Fargo. And last week, Karl Rove said that he wants to model the RNC along the lines of Roosevelts 1944 convention where Roosevelt positioned himself as a successful war president and dropped his Vice President in favor of a far more popular and less controversial politician.
Left unsaid in Kristols analysis but clearly implicit is that dropping Cheney for McCain would be pure political gold for the Bush administration. Whether deserved or not, John McCain has become a virtual political saint in this country. Both parties, when they seek to prove the right-ness of one of their positions, eagerly seek out a McCain quote to serve as support. Indeed, the one thing that both parties seem to agree on is that John McCains word is final.

Bill Kristol underestimates Cheney's value as vice-president. McCain is a true lightweight, almost as lightweight as Kerry, and to trade Cheney for McCain would be a terrible mistake.
The only shuffle that would make any sense would be to move Cheney into another key role in the administration, State for example, or the new Intel Czar. It might make sense to open the VP slot to someone who might run in 08; that person should not be McCain, in fact he is the last person we want in the presidency. McCain puts the "loose" in "cannon".
The only people who would make sense, besides Cheney, in the vp slot would be Powell or Rice. Powell is smart and would be good, although his pro-abortion stance would alienate a good part of the base. Rice is less forth-rightly pro-abortion, but also less weighty than Powell. She's smart though, and Rice as vp would stir the pot. Edwards debating Rice would look like an idiot (although presently I can't wait to watch Cheney take him apart; it will almost be childishly cruel, like pulling legs off a grass-hopper).
I like the team Bush has now. The only changes that wouldn't damage him would be a shuffle, with various members of the team switching hats.
Oh noooez! I've been made! :D
Now that I think more about it, it would be a PR disaster to try and do this switcharoo in the middle of the convention. There is a reason why both parties have been moving to more and more scripted events: Democratic Convention of '68. There is already the protests outside, we need unity and order on the floor this week. The chaos would overwhelm the coverage and the message of the party would be lost. If they were going to do this, for better or worse, they should have done it months ago.
Kick John Mccain in the stomach.
Every game needs a designated driver. Unless you let the boys crash on the couch and floor. :-)
Kristol a conservative??
Somehow he just doesn't fit that mold in my mind. To me, he comes off as someone who is impressed with his own perception of how things should be.
A Washington DC insider, through and through.
This f----g idiot nor kristol have no idea how loyal Bush is. I would not vote for Bush if he put this two faced bastard on the ticket. And I will bet you money that there are more of me than him.
why?
The question should never be, "will Bush dump Cheney?" but "Why are the Rats so afraid of Cheney?" The hatred and rumor mongering of the left against Cheney is proportional to the positive impact he's been having. I can't wait for him to debate Edwards!
I am a Republican Moderate and I HATE john mccain
Hmm...it looks like we can post blogs as articles on FR. Hey, since the precedent has been establish, that's fine with me.
bump
I believe he is a shining example of a neo-con in Pat Buchanan's new book.......
Never going to happen...
You are right.
I tried to stop and change that last sentence, but it was too late.
He's fair-weather, and he's mad because he's been ostracized.
my imitation of bill kristol in bed with a picture of john mcccain. Oh yes john oh yes oh yes johnny johnny johnny aargghhhhhhhh ummmmmm . the guy is pathetic in his blind love for the man. Him and matthews could have a nice circle jerk over McCain
McShame will never be in the same class as Cheney. Must be a Dem rumor.
McCain is playing a dangerous game of trying to control the election process. He isn't running, and his tit for tat regarding the Vietnam war is making both sides look weak.
Remember, McCain was also slated to be Kerry's VP, and Kerry denied it. Now McCain is floating this little balloon.
When Mrs. McCain comes out for Kerry, you have to follow the money....both Kerry and McCain families gained a ton of money through normalized relations with Vietnam.
I think it's high time we get some Consumers for Freedom 527 ads running detailing their sell-out of the POWs for their own personal financial gain.
