US Bars 6 Foreign-Flagged Ships Today
The United States has denied entry to 6 foreign-flagged ships today, as tough new global laws to protect shipping from terrorist attacks went into effect.
Washington is enforcing the new United Nations code by turning away ships that are not security-certified, and by delaying ships that have called at "contaminated" ports.
The Coast Guard barred only 6 of the 265 ships that called today. All 6 were freighters flying foreign flags. One ship was publicly identified: The Dahomey Express, which is Bolivian-flagged.
Despite considerable publicity given the new rules, only about half of the world's ports and 53% of global shipping lines have complied with the International Ship and Port Facility Security code; and the United States is the first nation to actually enforce the code.
