WASHINGTON (AP) The Coast Guard denied entry to three foreign ships that planned to enter U.S. ports on Thursday, the first day ships were required to comply with new international security rules.

Coast Guardsmen began boarding every foreign-flagged vessel that arrived to make sure they met the new standards.

Its amazing that the CG can do what it does, given the age of its equipment.

In addition to its new security duties, the Coast Guard now has 11 vessels in European and Middle Eastern waterways to provide increased security for the oil industry.

Interesting.

CG will definitely need its hardware in shape to carry out the new inspection program. Is the CG the 7th strongest Navy in the world?

My father was a Machinist Mate 1st Class in the Navy during WWII, and used to joke about how somebody had to be over 6' tall to join the Coast Guard in case the boat sank so they could wade ashore. He was a hoot and I sure do miss him.

We lived on Staten Island NY and I remember the pill boxes that were set up on the beach.

He would be proud of all of our military, and that would include the Coast Gaurd today.

And may God bless our President.

He said more than 20 of the Coast Guard's 55 110-foot patrol boats — the workhorses of the fleet — have had their hulls breached over the past 2 1/2 years.

I don't like to have the Government spending my money, but I'd be much happier if they spent it on a new CG fleet than on many of the other things that seem to claim their attention.

Trust me, speaking as a Coastie Vet (24 years service); we are the red-headed stepchild when it comes to having a good budget that covers our needed eqpt and gets our mission accomplished despite the scant resources.

When i was stationed in Portsmouth, VA back in 85-88, the USCGC TANEY was still active and would tie up alongside us. The TANEY, btw, survived Pearl Harbor, and had been built back in the '30's.

They do have some force multiplication, using the Auxillary.

But, they do need their fleet to be upgraded.

At least loyal Coast Guardsman are doing the job, not Jameel Rashid. He is on the signers list -- HERE IS THE ENEMY.

After you read the A.N.S.W.E.R. petititon and see Rashid's name, aren't you glad he was turned in to his commander? Doug from Upland is just so mean.

My experience is 16 years in bunkering Great Lakes shipping in Duluth-Superior and the north shore of Superior. The CG has one very old breaker on the Lakes and I think she might be pre-WW II or certainly that era.
The Canadians have vastly superior equipment and the Russian boats are light years advanced. Otherwise, buoy tenders are about all else that floats up there. Talk about an open border...

I can see having CG in Middle Eastern waters, but in Europe?... With Jack Iraq doing every underhanded thing he can to ruin the liberation of Iraq efforts? Let the darn frogs and schnitzles patrol their own damn oil industry threats!

The Coast Guard plans to modernize its fleet over the next 20 years. Some members of Congress say that schedule needs to shortened.

Then Congress needs to appropriate more money. Maybe we can reduce ethanol subsidies or quit paying people to buy alternative fuel cars or other socialist agenda items in order to provide for the common defense as opposed to the "common good".

Coastie Bump fellow sailor. I hear you loud and clear. I was on the Sweetgum, a buoy tender built in the 40's I believe. It has a beautiful steel hull, which would go nicely with mine sweeping duty which was suggested we do back in 1987.

It was not always a good time, but we make it a good time. Friends for life. We have to give our fellow coasties credit for being in at this difficult time, not an easy mission to accomplish. And usually not regognized on a regular basis.

Updated Story?

US Bars 6 Foreign-Flagged Ships Today

The United States has denied entry to 6 foreign-flagged ships today, as tough new global laws to protect shipping from terrorist attacks went into effect.

Washington is enforcing the new United Nations code by turning away ships that are not security-certified, and by delaying ships that have called at "contaminated" ports.

The Coast Guard barred only 6 of the 265 ships that called today. All 6 were freighters flying foreign flags. One ship was publicly identified: The Dahomey Express, which is Bolivian-flagged.

Despite considerable publicity given the new rules, only about half of the world's ports and 53% of global shipping lines have complied with the International Ship and Port Facility Security code; and the United States is the first nation to actually enforce the code.
