I was in Beijing recently and saw lots of Cherokees and other SUVs.

I was just there this past March and will be moving there in August as well.
I didn't say they didn't have them, I just said their streets are not made for them. YOu may have noticed that there are no parking lots, on-street parking, parking garages..etc. Most of the autos in China are compact cars, not huge SUV's. (btw, SUV's just started appearing in China within the last couple of years. When I was there in 2001, there were hardly any American vehicles.
The Chinese like their SUVs. Next they might like some roads.
Turn your back on a Chinaman for 15 minutes and he starts a business. This is one of the strengths of the culture. I'll bet a lot of these SUVs and vans are destined to be jitneys.
Then I guess there is nothing to the rumor that each Chinaman that buys an SUV gets ten slaves to make the roads to wherever that Chinaman wants to go? ;)
And here I thought that SUV's could go off roading.
