Hunley Appears Headed To North Charleston

North Charleston, SC (AP) - North Charleston may have the inside track to build a museum to house the Confederate submarine Hunley. Members of the Hunley Commission say they may decide among North Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Charleston within two months. Commissioner member Randy Burbage says it appears North Charleston is the logical choice. North Charleston has offered 13 million dollars to build the museum. Commission officials estimate the museum could cost 40 million dollars.

Mount Pleasant has withdrawn most of the money from its offer. Charleston has withdrawn plans for a site near the South Carolina Aquarium.

The Hunley sank with its crew of eight in 1864 after sinking the Union blockade ship Housatonic off Charleston. The sub was raised in 2000 and brought to a lab at the old Charleston Naval Base.

North Charleston eh...thats my old stomping grounds, I personally think she should be put in the city of Charleston, but thats my little opinion.

on a side note, I had a chance to go and see the Hunley at the former (thanks Clinton...)Charleston Naval Shipyard it was quite a site.

I live there..............real safe, senior.

Mount Pleasant has more cops per capita than any city in the state. Whatever you do, don't speed or have more than a couple before you get behind the wheel.

No drinking on this trip. We are on the way to Florida. We thought it was a good stopping point on Thurs and we are taking the kids to some sites on Friday before we hit the road again. Perhaps we'll do the Yorktown or a carriage tour.

I've been there to see the Hunley. It was very worthwhile, especially if you are interested in Civil War history and marine archaeology. Absolutely fascinating.

Fort Sumpter, Magnolia Cemetary, King and Queen Streets, not a bad town to spend a few days.

Both worthwhile............weather should not be terribly cold so a trip to the beach at Isle of Palms (10 minutes from your hotel) very much worth the time.

Never crowded (no hotels).....try to go around low tide (check the local paper)....some of the most beutiful beaches in the USA.
Plenty of parking right behind the dunes.............

If Sherman's army gets there in time, they can cut them off at the pass.

I've been to Isle of Palms and it is nice. One of the best beaches I have seen. But we are staying on St Augustine Beach one night so we will try to do the history thing in Charleston. My kids want to see the slave market and we might take a carriage ride.

Slave market is fine....beware it is also known as "flea" market.....carriage rides are cool as well. Almost all the carriage tours will take you along the Battery (beuatiful old homes that predate the war....of 1812)...when you are along the battery look out into the harbor and you will see Ft. Sumpter about 3 miles away....amazing that they could land 1860's vintage artillery rounds on the Fort from that distance.
