The music business is different from the television business. TV has corporate sponsers who buy airtime to finance expensive shows. By contrast, music CD's are made cheaply and require a much smaller audience to turn a profit. Eminem's core audience, who have made him rich, does not include many people who voted for Bush in the first place. But on the bright side, this was only a stolen demo tape and no decision had been made on whether to publish it. Chances are, they won't.

Actually, I was one of that group that dismissed him offhand, that is until he performed on one of the plethura of awards shows a few years ago with Elton John. Can't remember the name of the particular song, I just remember thinking that if you give a little thought to what he is putting out there, it's kinda interesting. Not something I want my kid listening to, and not what I'd call genius material, but not turd stuff either. Even my wife gave me that "woah" look. People need to give things a little broader look every once in a while, and try to appreciate it for what it is. Yeah, keep it away from your kids, but it is worth a listen.

This is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of the stupidest posts I've ever seen on FR. Not only would 90% of the posters on this thread not know an Eminem song if it jumped out of their radio and bit them on the nose, they don't even have the slightest idea of what they're talking about. FACTS people! Slime attacks on individuals -- even Eminem -- are the province of DU, not FR.

Let's review: The "song" in question was an unfinished, unreleased rough cut. It was not released by Eminem. It was posted on the web without his permission; quite likely by enemies of his who'd managed to obtain a copy in some manner -- perhaps even the same people who web-posted an early Eminem song (juvenalia, really) with "racist" lyrics. Remember that? It was only a week or two ago. There's clearly an effort being made to smear Eminem right now and I'd be very hesitant to leap on to that bandwagon until I saw who my fellow passengers were.

As to the lyric in question: As pointed out above, the line is taken completely out of context. Even were that not the case, this is an OLD outtake. It was probably written before Bush was even in office.

Look, I'm not a fan of hip-hop, though I'll admit to liking a FEW of Eminem's songs (especially "Without Me", with that great anti- Moby section). I'll also grant that Eminem is a bit of a mess, and hardly a role model. To his credit, however, he has NEVER said anything disparaging about Bush that I've been able to find. In fact, aside for a certain disdain shown for Bill Clinton, Eminem has shown himself to be both refreshingly non-political and distinctly non-PC.

Let's save the lynch mob mentality for someone who's actually done something to deserve it, OK?

Eminem is the most popular artist on the planet today. We won't make a dent. I went to Costa Rica and the only grafitti I saw there was for Eminem. I went to Thailand and was amazed by how many Eminem shirts were on sale. I would prefer if we did some light-hearted parody that kind of made the point that Eminem's just spitting these lyrics to generate some controversy and make a quick buck. He says it's not about the "fu**ing money" but everyone knows it is.

Since Moby is a worthless Bush-bashing twirp, anyone who can tell him to go shove it with THAT kind of directness has my respect.

After learning that Ricky Martin was going to perform at one of Bush's inaugural balls, Moby wrote in his blog that he would never work with Martin unless he admitted that Bush was the antichrist.

On the other hand, as I wrote in an earlier thread, Eminem saying that he wishes the President dead is not an indication of anti-Bushism as much as it is that he is striving to say something that will upset people enough to complain.

This constant search for controversy is an Eminem trademark. For instance, in his track "Who Knew" from The Marshall Mathers LP, in a profane stream-of-thought spew expressing how he couldn't have predicted his success or the influence that he would be credited with wielding, he goes far out of his way to make fun of the circumstances leading to the paralyzing of Christopher Reeve and the death of Sonny Bono:

Does anyone think Marshall Mathers had anything against either figure? It's impossible to know, but it's more likely that he just was saying something outrageous for outrageousness' sake.

Mathers is probably delighted at the attention that this is getting, and I wouldn't be surprised if this leak of an unreleased track was orchestrated by record company execs. Don't count out the possibility that an additional track addressing this controversy will be added to his next CD, with sentiments similar to those of another part of the Mathers LP track noted above:

I don't own an Eminem CD, and although his heartfelt "Lose Yourself" is one of the best singles of this young millennium, I don't go out of my way to listen to him. But when I watched his performance on the Grammy Awards with Elton John two years ago out of pure curiosity (I wondered, frankly, if John would sabotage the performance, as he did in a famous on-stage spat with Tina Turner), I gained a little respect for the guy for recording "Stan," the #1 single about an obsessed Eminem fan who tragically acts out in real life all the violent fictional fantasies of Em's breakthrough The Slim Shady LP in an attempt to get a letter back from his idol.
