Syria Threatens to Attack Israel's Golan Heights

By Reuters / INA

London---October 25.....Syria will strike back if Israel attacks again, and could hit Israeli cities and towns in the Golan Heights, Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara said in a British Sunday newspaper interview.

Syria did not retaliate after Israel raided what it called a "terrorist camp" near Damascus earlier this month, its first strike on Syria in three decades.

"After we were attacked, we acted in a responsible way and went to the United Nations, and a majority of our people supported that," Shara told the Sunday Telegraph.

"But if we are attacked again the people will not stand for it, and we will have to carry out the will of the people," he said.

"We have many cards that have not been played. Don't forget there are many Israeli settlements in the Golan. I am not exaggerating but I am describing things as they might happen."

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and annexed the territory in 1981. The two countries are officially still at war.

Israel struck Syrian territory on October 5 after a suicide bomber murdered 20 people in a beach restaurant in the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

Israel said its target was a training base for Palestinian terrorists.

Palestinian terrorism struck the Israeli port city of Haifa, murdering 20 people in a restaurant. Five children were reported dead. Picture above, an Israeli child, clinging onto life, is rushed to hospital.

Syria has come under increasing pressure from Washington to crack down on Palestinian terrorists.

Washington has long included Damascus on its list of states that sponsor terrorism, and the House of Representatives voted this month to impose diplomatic and economic sanctions on Syria for as long as the White House considers it a terror supporter.

The Senate must pass the bill before President Bush can sign it into law.

Shara told the Sunday Telegraph the government of President Bashar al-Assad had shut down representative offices of Palestinian militant groups Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command.

Shara also said Syria was unable to stop militants from crossing into Iraq to attack U.S. troops there.

"They are very determined and many of them dream of seeing an American tank," he said.

Fine. Let them see them rolling into Damascus.

We the Syrians some payback. Big time.

I'd give my eye tooth to see Syria attack Israel.

So would Bashar al-Assad. And his molars, and his left leg, and anything else the IDF left identifiable.

"Syria Threatens to Attack Israel's Golan Heights"

Israel's response: "Feel lucky punk? Well, do ya?"

Slightly misleading headline.

Syria Threatens to Attack Israel's Golan Heights

Is not the same as

Syria will strike back if Israel attacks again, and could hit Israeli cities and towns in the Golan Heights,

If you study Syria's strategic position, you will find that they are what in geopolitical circles is known as "deep doodoo".

Israel to the west, the U.S. to the east, and Turkey to the north, all of whom despise Bashar Assad. Israeli land forces are 30 miles from Damascus, and Syria wouldn't last 3 days in a shooting war. That being the case, you have to wonder how smart this kind of bluster is.

You got it.

People ignore the fact that we didn't just take out Saddam; we flanked both Syria and Iran.

Of those two, Syria is in the deepest doo.

The story headline could not be more accurate!
Israel is attacked daily by Syrian backed Hezbollah terrorist forces in Israeli-Lebanese cross-border assaults.
Wake up and read the news.

Syria cannot and will not continue to harbor and train terrorists to blow up Israeli buses and restaurants.
If Syria want a war - we are more than ready here.

Perhaps Syria is feeling a bit blustery now that she has
at least some portion of Saddam's WMDs. What she does not realize is that those WMDs were of no help to Saddam, and will be of no future help to Assad.

Syria: "We acted in a responsible way."

Translation #1: "They caught us totally asleep at the wheel."

Translation #2: "We're a chicken$hit nation that got caught red-handed".

Very good.

Iran has similiar problems, if perhaps not quite as acute.
