  • Shortened antibiotic treatment for ventilator-associated pneumonia in ICU patients just as effective as standard course

Less is also better—that is what researchers have found while conducting a tri-nation clinical trial to see if shorter courses of antibiotics are as effective as longer prescriptions of the drug to treat ventilator-associated pneumonia. The four-year long study involved 460 patients. While personalized short-course treatment duration for patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) was just as effective in comparison to the standard treatment duration, the short-course treatment strategy also successfully reduced antibiotic side effects from 38% to 8%. VAP is a common lung infection among critically ill patients who are dependent on ventilators to breathe. The infection risk of death...

  • New evidence of link between ICU stays, development of dementia

ICU stays may be associated with a higher risk of developing dementia, according to a study. Researchers found that hospitalization in intensive care units was associated with double the risk of dementia compared with those who did not experience ICU hospitalization. Epidemiologist Bryan James, Ph.D. said that while ICU hospitalization due to critical illness has been linked to subsequent cognitive impairment in older patients, fewer studies have demonstrated a relationship between ICU hospitalization and a long-term risk of developing Alzheimer's or other age-related dementias. "Given the high rate of ICU hospitalization in older persons, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, it...

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — COVID-19 hospitalization numbers have plunged to their lowest levels since the early days of the pandemic, offering a much needed break to health care workers and patients alike following the omicron surge. The number of patients hospitalized with the coronavirus has fallen more than 90% in more than two months, and some hospitals are going days without a single COVID-19 patient in the ICU for the first time since early 2020....

Some of you who’ve wanted to put me out of my misery darn near got what you wished for! So, sorry to disappoint you!

About 70% of patients admitted to the hospital are unvaccinated, as are more than 90% of those who die there. Like hospitals across the country, Luminis Health Doctors Community Hospital is facing a two-pronged crisis in this surge, with thin staffing and more covid-19 patients than ever before. Employees who remain have no choice but to shoulder bigger burdens. Among the heaviest, they say, is the emotional weight of so much preventable death.

Daniel Pisano is dying of COVID-19. He’s been on ventilator in Florida for 28 days now at the Mayo Clinic. His doctors give him a less than 5% chance of survival. His wife and son want him treated with the COVID plan recommended by Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC). It involves using ivermectin. They want Dr. Eduardo Balbona to treat their family member. The Mayo Clinic refused. The family went to court, hoping the court would force the clinic to allow an outside doctor to treat Pisano. Judge Marianne Aho decided against it.They appealed that decision and lost that...

Hospitals in Texas have reported an increased number of full intensive care units (ICUs) as the delta variant of the coronavirus continues to ravage communities. According to data released Monday, 42 Texas hospitals reported that their ICU beds were filled to capacity between Oct. 8 and Oct. 14. The data is released by the federal government's Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on a weekly basis and accounts for about 200 Texas hospitals that have more than four ICU patients or four staffed ICU beds. Other hospitals with smaller ICU departments also reported data to HHS.

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection that can be bacterial, fungal, protozoal, or viral in origin, including the virus that causes COVID-19 infection — severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). When a person experiences a dysregulated immunologic (ie, inflammation) or coagulopathic (ie, micro- or macroclotting and bleeding) host response initiated by SARS-CoV-2 infection, it is a form of viral sepsis

A heartless neonatal ICU nurse has been fired for mocking a newborn with a birth defect by posting photos of the sick infant on social media and writing 'your intestines posed to be inside not outside baby'. Sierra Samuels, who had worked as a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami since 2016, was fired Thursday following the outcome of a weeks-long investigation into a patient privacy breach, reported CBS Miami. Samuels had posted two photos on her Instagram of a baby in her care who had been born with a condition causing its intestines to be outside of its...

DES MOINES, Iowa (KETV) — Mark McConnaughey was a guy you could count on for anything, according to his long-time friend and doctor Mike Zaruba. "If someone was in need, he would drop whatever he was doing, even if he needed to get what he was doing done, and come help," Zaruba said. KETV reports two weeks ago, when the 57-year-old needed care beyond what the Nemaha County Hospital could provide, Zaruba, a board-certified ER doctor, said they could not find any help available in Nebraska. "That triggered an inflammatory response through his body that cause multi-organ failure," Zaruba said....

A top Alabama health official this week announced that the state has more intensive care patients than ICU beds to care for them. Alabama Hospital Association President Don Williamson told an NBC News affiliate station in Montgomery on Tuesday that the state hospital system is facing a “negative” number of available ICU beds. “We’ve never been here before. We are in truly now in uncharted territory in terms of our ICU bed capacity,” Williamson said.
