  • Shock: Consumer Confidence Unexpectedly Plummets, Worst Decline in Three Years

Consumer confidence in September suffered the worst decline in more than three years, dragged down by a weaker labor market and rising pessimism about future business conditions and incomes. The Conference Board on Tuesday said its index of U.S. consumer confidence fell to 98.7 in January from 105.6, near the lowest of the range for the index over the past two years. Economists had expected a slight decline to 103 from the preliminary estimate of 103.3 for August. Increasingly pessimistic expectations for the economy’s performance in the months ahead and a weaker labor market drove September’s confidence decline.
  • Flavonoid consumption may reduce the risk of dementia, new study shows

New research has found that those who consume more foods rich in flavonoids, such as berries, tea, red wine and dark chocolate, could lower their risk of dementia. Led by researchers, the study, reveals that increasing the intake of flavonoid-rich foods and drinks could help reduce the risk of developing the incurable illness. While age and genetics contribute substantially to the development of the disease, evidence has shown that risk factors such as diet, can play an important role in prevention. Flavoniods, primarily found in plant foods, have a range of health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. They...

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A tropical depression could form next week as an area of low pressure in the Caribbean moves toward the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said Friday. “A tropical wave likely develops in the western Caribbean early next week. Right now, there’s a 40% chance in seven days,” Max Defender 8 Meteorologist Legh Spann said. “Many of the models drift the system north into the Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week.” As of Friday afternoon, most of the models appeared to zero in on a northern Gulf coast landfall. However, Spann said...

LL Flooring - previously known as Lumber Liquidators - is shutting all its stores after going out of business after three decades. The retailer, one of America's biggest flooring suppliers, was looking for a buyer after filing for bankruptcy. Earlier in the summer it had 442 stores, but shut nearly 100 as it looked to cut costs and woo investors. No buyer could be found. In a letter to customers yesterday, bosses said: 'It is with a heavy heart that we must let you know that we are going to begin the process of winding down the business and closing...
  • Duloxetine may help elderly with depression and cognitive impairment

An already registered antidepressant, duloxetine, may also have positive effects on memory and cognitive functions in the elderly. A new study shows that duloxetine, in addition to treating depression, also inhibits an enzyme involved in the regulation of the nervous system that affects memory and cognition. This could potentially prevent the development of dementia diseases, especially Alzheimer's disease. "Both depression and cognitive impairment often occur simultaneously in elderly individuals, particularly those in the early stages of a dementia disease," says Taher Darreh-Shori. "The discovery that duloxetine can have a dual effect is very promising." "This has been an unexpected discovery...

The wealthy are doing just fine at the moment, but they don’t seem to understand that much of the country is deeply hurting right now. 59 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. economy is currently experiencing a recession, and that is because most of them are personally experiencing economic pain. Literally just about everything is substantially more expensive in 2024, more major layoffs are being announced with each passing day, and thousands of businesses are going bankrupt. We haven’t seen a tsunami of economic suffering like this in a long time.If you live in a wealthy area in a...

The coming economic collapse will not resemble the Great Depression. Yes, we are in a recession – but it will not be reminiscent of the Great Depression that began in 1929. DustBowl 2 For you see, the landscape is entirely different now. America was transitioning from an economy based on agriculture to industrialization. About 40% of the economy was agriculture-based at the time. Outside factors like the Dust Bowl provided those is the agriculture sector with no alternative for work, hence the US experiences unemployment rates around 25% because farmers were out of work. The economy cannot be properly analyzed...
  • Food and exercise can treat depression as well as a psychologist, our study found. And it's cheaper.

Our world-first trial shows improving diet and doing more physical activity can be as effective as therapy with a psychologist for treating low-grade depression. Our trial targeted people with elevated distress, meaning at least mild depression but not necessarily a diagnosed mental disorder. Typical symptoms included feeling down, hopeless, irritable or tearful. We partnered with our local mental health service to recruit 182 adults and provided group-based sessions on Zoom. All participants took part in up to six sessions over eight weeks, facilitated by health professionals. Half were randomly assigned to participate in a program co-facilitated by an accredited practicing...

A 20-year-old woman has accused Planned Parenthood of rushing her into a gender transition when she was 18, leaving her with lifelong side effects. Cristina Hineman has filed a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest single provider of abortion, contraception, reproductive care, and sex education. The organization has in recent years also become a leading provider of gender transition hormones for young adults, offering the service at more than 400 locations. At least 40,000 patients have gone to Planned Parenthood for hormone treatment this year. Hineman claims she was given a prescription for testosterone following a 30-minute consultation with...

Two new surveys say most Americans think the recession has already begun. This must come as a shock to our mendacious media sacrificing fresh mountains of newsprint to gaslight Kackles over the 50-yard line come November. Meanwhile, nearly 70% of Americans report that inflation—which that same media told us was long gone —continues making life a struggle, with little prospect of saving for the future or getting out of debt. The numbers come from two surveys by left-wing Guardian-Harris polling, and another from payment network Affirm, who sampled 2,000 Americans. Nearly 60% say we’re already in recession, and on average,...
  • Researchers find potential therapeutic to counteract mental health effects of cannabis (NAC)

    08/01/2024 8:12:59 PM PDT · by ConservativeMind · 35 replies
Researchers have found an over-the-counter natural health product may help counteract negative effects of heavy cannabis use among adolescents aged 12 to 17, including depression, anxiety and diminished motivation in adulthood. Marta De Felice and Steven Laviolette demonstrated in animal models that interventions using antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can mitigate the detrimental mental health effects of chronic cannabis use later in life. Sometimes referred to as "amotivational syndrome," chronic cannabis use in adolescents can result in a lack of motivation, diminished enjoyment from daily activities and other depressive effects. Currently, there is no known intervention strategy available. The study found that...

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday said the swelling national debt is manageable as long as it stays around where it is relative to the rest of the economy. In a CNBC interview, Yellen also noted that high interest rates are adding to the burden as the U.S. manages its massive $34.7 trillion debt load. "If the debt is stabilized relative to the size of the economy, we're in a reasonable place," she told CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin during a "Squawk Box" live interview. "The way I look at it is that we should be looking at the real interest...

The new research is more evidence linking cannabis to an increased risk of mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, anxiety and depression, particularly in adolescence. Teenagers who used cannabis within the last year had a dramatically higher rate of developing a psychotic disorder, according to a study published Wednesday. The study, led by researchers from the University of Toronto, found an 11 times higher risk of developing a psychotic disorder among teenagers who used cannabis compared with those who did not. When the analysis was limited to just emergency room visits and hospitalizations, there was a 27-fold increase in psychotic disorders...

I asked this question about Joe Biden's visit to New Hampshire on Tuesday: why is Biden going there right in the middle of the campaign when New Hampshire should be a state that he shouldn't even be worrying about? It hasn't gone red since Al Gore ran in 2000. But as I noted, recent polling from the NH Journal/Praecones Analytica Poll had them basically even with Trump slightly up 36.6 to 36.5. Robert F. Kennedy Jr is at 14. 6 percent and undecided is at 12.4 percent. Prior polling from January had Biden up by 6.5 in the RCP average....

One tax table is focused on taxing Americans on their ordinary income, the income you earn from your job or your business. The other tax table is focused on taxing your long-term capital gains, meaning assets that have grown in appreciation such as stocks or your business value held more than 365 days. * * * According to a report issued by the Treasury Department, led by Secretary Janet Yellen, Biden’s proposed fiscal year 2025 budget would increase the top marginal rate on long-term capital gains and qualified dividends to an astonishing 44.6%. Today, that top marginal long-term capital gains...

A new psychological assessment has been developed to measure the endorsement of attitudes related to critical social justice. Findings from its application in a Finnish study reveal that stronger alignment with these so-called “woke” beliefs correlates with heightened instances of anxiety and depression...One of the central revelations of the study was that critical social justice attitudes are not as widespread in Finland as might be inferred from public and media discussions. Overall, the findings suggested a cautious reception towards critical social justice among the general population. This observation was particularly pronounced among male participants, who showed considerably lower agreement with...
