PHILADELPHIA—If the new rules of politics post-2016 were to hold up, the official launch rally Joe Biden held here on Saturday would mean that he is in trouble: The crowd wasn’t huge, was largely white and older, and, for the most part, only really got into it when he mentioned Barack Obama or Donald Trump.

Yet Biden’s high-and-getting-higher poll numbers, the early fundraising success that has surprised even his own aides, and the enthusiastic responses I heard from supporters who came out on a hot afternoon to see him don’t show a candidate in much trouble at all. Biden’s campaign is a bet: that in the four years since Trump launched his campaign, the country hasn’t changed, the Democratic Party hasn’t changed, and politics hasn’t changed.

If any of Biden’s competitors believed the same thing, they wouldn’t be planning killer schedules in Iowa, New Hampshire, and beyond, giving up vacations and time with their family to meet with donors and activists and to have reporters constantly shove microphones in their face. Trump and Bernie Sanders were the breakout candidates of the last presidential election, but unlike most of the other people running, Biden and his aides haven’t adjusted to that reality—because they don’t accept that it is reality.

Biden’s message is very Trump-aware: “If you’d asked me a few years ago if our democracy was at stake, I would have smiled and laughed a little bit,” the former vice president said on Saturday. “No more: The threat to this nation, to our democracy, is real, it’s clear, and it’s present.”

DNC is using the Biden “campaign” as a fund-raiser targeting whatever “moderate” Democrats are left. That’s who is supporting Biden, the white “moderate” middle class who do not identify with the radical left of the party. Then, when the time comes, the DNC will put Joe back on the shelf where he belongs and use the PAC dollars he collected to fund Kamala Harris and whomever she chooses as her running mate. No one seriously expects a white septuagenarian male to ever occupy the White House again. With the rapidly shifting demographics we are getting from the destruction of our country’s sovereignty and the invasion at the southern border, the odds are seriously against it, guys.

In a 1993 speech, Biden used racist-type language that is coming back to haunt the 2020 wannabe:
Biden described a "cadre of young people (he means Black people), tens of thousands of them, born out of wedlock,
without parents, without supervision, without any structure, without any conscience ... because they literally have not been socialized....
Biden said if we dont focus on them now a portion of them, will become the predators 15 years from now."

Biden was echoing the Clintons-----then-Pres Bill signed into law stiffer penalties for inner city criminals.......

Man’s greatest failing may be routine as in habit. It is a vestige of caveman days when today being the same as yesterday meant safety.

In a modern political context, it means that Biden’s faux-breezy portrayal of the awful Obama years as The Good Times is a tough sell when those years are contrasted with the Trump years that directly followed them.

One minute Joe’s talking about ‘dignity in politics’ (a laughable oxymoron), the next he’s saying our democracy is at stake. This is not messaging...it’s futile, blind clutching at straws.

Note that the press are not amplifying his nonsense outright. They are hedging their bets by talking about strategy, polls, frontrunner status etc. The truth is they don’t think he can win because they watch the old codger’s stage managed silliness and know he doesn’t have the physical and mental stamina required.

I don’t see how Joe gets away from the terrible legacy of Obama. Targeted drone kills, investigating reporters, pallets of cash to Iran, caving to China and kissing the a** of every despot in the world (while taking payola).

Biden also seems tired. He drinks a lot (hence his grabby touchy mode) and can’t handle the physical toll of a long campaign. He’ll be passing out like Hillary before it’s over - if he’s in it for the long haul. Expecting the Clinton machine to knock Joe out and Hillary be “drafted” at the convention.
