I do, too, that was before the George W Bush administration that Gillespie was part of that refused to enforce the laws and borders.
Before W. was President Virginia was English speaking and low crime.
Virginia will be solid red again, within 15 years.
There is a huge veterans preference in federal hiring. In my experience, well over 2/3 of new federal hires are veterans.
This is going to dramatically shift the politics of the federal workforce over the next 10-20 years. Without huge super majorities for the Democrats in the DC area, Virginia will return to the red column.

No joke... It makes me sad. I was born in VA and lived there until age 20 when we moved to NC. I remember when VA always went R.
What has changed is the growth of metropolitan Washington, DC. The fastest growth is going on in the ring counties surrounding DC. There have been many transplants moving in, helping turn most of those counties Democrat. They are also the most populated in the state. The rest is red, but the biggest counties are blue.
Now it’s all about the People’s Republic of Fairfax
Virginia is becoming an extension of D.C. as more and more government/political "workers' move into the area.
