Trump could help Republicans pick up two more Senate seats

There is a reasonable chance that two more Democrat Senate seats could be lost to the GOP when the next Congress convenes.

It would be great if Trump could appoint Susan Collins and other RINOs to some undersecretary or ambassador posts, just to start clearing deadwood from the Senate.

WV has a Democrat governor, who would appoint a Democrat replacement for Manchin.

Manchin is one of the few congressional democrats that is not insane. He will probably switch to the Republican Party. There is no place for him in the democrat party.

Not if Manchin switches parties and stays a Senator, which is what the article is saying.

MCCain may get Flake to join him in the switch. This has been my concern for awhile as it would provide the Dems with majority with no tie. Now if Heitkamp is appointed and the LA seat goes R then Pence still can break a tie.

Governors still appoint when there is a vacancy; just as before the 17th Amendment of the Constitution.

The only difference is that the appointed Senator is filling the term of the departed Senator; and must stand for election during the next Federal Senate Election to complete the term if he/she wishes (if appointed in years 1 through 4 of the term) or during the Federal Senate Election for that Senate class.

Collins seat would be replaced at the next election by a DEM.

Trump must go directly to We The People and have the American people put pressure on spineless, gutless, worthless RINOs who want to remain in DC.

Any politician who wantonly ignores their constituents these days is finished next time around. It is up to us to make sure that happens. Name names and put the spotlight on every duplicitous thing they do.

Are you sure? Maine was pretty competitive for Trump, who lost by less than the votes for Gary Johnson. In a two way race for Senate, it seems to be competitive, with the right candidate.

Actually, I am mistaken. Apologies. Only 36 states work that way. Arizona requires that the appointee be of the same party as the Senator vacating the spot. So - yank McCain to some ceremonial spot; and get Joe Arpaio appointed (lol’ing to myself at the prospect of that happening)...

The other 14 have a hodgepodge of special elections, or keeping the seat vacant until the next election.

A clever new President could play the Senate vacancy game to his advantage by picking off a handful of opposing party Senators to appointed roles from the right States that would provide a beneficial seat-flipping result.

I think the author is suggesting that Manchin might change parties to obtain some relevancy and more approval in his state.

Challenge McCain to fix the VA and prove he can be a real “hero”.

Appoint them to EPA and Education, then shut them down.

The new governor was a Republican until 2014 and is very pro-coal. His wiki says he was endorsed by United Mine Workers.

WV has been a very traditionally Democratic state, but they’re having a sort of identity crisis now that their party has gone to crazy town. I read somewhere recently that when Bill Clinton ran for president, WV was considered the 1st or 2nd most Democratic state in the country and now it’s the 1st or 2nd most Republican state in the country.

I think Democrat governors will still be viable in WV for a while longer as they can at least rhetorically oppose the radicalized national party agenda, but for US Senators, that’s a much harder task. Reid has given Manchin a very wide berth (you’ll recall his 2012 ad in which he literally put a bullet through a cap and trade bill) which has enabled him to survive 4 years ago and TBH probably again in 2018. Remember, Obama got 35% of the vote in WV in 2012, but they spared Manchin, whose opponent got 36% - crazy.

It’s probably wise to get Manchin out of there by any means necessary because I wouldn’t bank on him losing his reelection bid, no matter how much D’s get hammered in the next midterm. He’s well-regarded from his days as governor and can’t easily be cast in the same mold as the rest of the hardened Marxists in the senate.

Good self-correction.

The 17th Amendment actually leaves the state legislatures with the authority to fill vacancies, except in temporary cases.

When vacancies happen in the representation of any state in the Senate, the executive authority of such state shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, that the legislature of any state may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

Places where governors do not fill the vacancy until the next general election are, for instance, here: http://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/vacancies-in-the-united-states-senate.aspx

Trump should appoint Dem Senators from red states to run HUD, Education, EPA and Energy, after securing a commitment from Ryan and McConnel to eliminate those departments early next year.

Gain 4 Rep Senators and lose 4 UN-neccessary federal agencies.

Appoints, and then filled in next general. There is no provision for a special election in WV. There is in ND.

Well I will do my part to see that John Kennedy is the other Republican Senator from Louisiana next Saturday Nov. 10th in the runoff election.

Sorry, he couldn’t do that. Because they are talking about him switching parties, not taking some other position.

Better play for Trump is to call in a favor for appointing McConnell's wife. Manchin might be induced to switch to our caucus with the right chairmanship.

The art of the deal.

You're right. From the title, "Trump could help Republicans pick up two more Senate seats", I assumed the author was talking about appointments.
