Sen. Mike Lee: Cruz wins on second ballot
The Hill's Briefing Room ^ | April 7, 2016 | Jessie Hellmann

Utah Sen. Mike Lee said he believes Ted Cruz would be the GOP presidential nominee if the convention is contested.

"On successive ballots, I think victory is more likely to go to Ted Cruz," Lee, who is a backer of the Texas senator, said during a radio interview Wednesday. "We have to remember that most Republicans around the country have voted for someone other than Donald Trump."

A convention would become contested if no candidate gets 1,237 delegates beforehand. On the first ballot, delegates are typically bound to the candidates their state picked in the primaries or caucuses. On subsequent ballots, however, many are released and can shift to another candidate.

"I would not be a bit surprised if Ted Cruz won in that circumstance, in fact, I'd be surprised if he didn't. On second ballots, on successive ballots, you're going to see more and more delegates moving to Ted Cruz," Lee said.

Donald Trump leads the pack with 743 delegates, followed by Cruz, who has 517, according to Bloomberg's count. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who left the race last month after a loss in his home state, has 171 delegates, followed by John Kasich, who has 143.

If Cruz wins on the second ballot after Trump gained more votes and committed delegates, then Cruz loses in a landslide in the general election. Maybe that’s the GOPe plan. Put Cruz on the top of the ticket despite coming in second, and then blame the lost on Trump voters, while having their favorite candidate Hillary win.

Nobody is being disenfranchised. The nominee has always been chosen by delegates at the convention. Nobody wins the nomination until he/she can get the votes of a majority of delegates. That’s the way it has always been. It’s not manipulation either. That’s the entire point of the convention. Delegates are chosen at state and local conventions. State parties decide how to choose delegates. If you don’t like it, start your own party.

No, it doesn’t. It shows that Ted has taken a hit from Trump’s smear campaign. Cruz’s numbers will come up when voters get to know him. Everyone knows Trump already and 70% can’t stand him.

The Cruzer arrogance here is hysterical. Cruz can’t beat no money Kasich in the east but he’s going to get the nom and win general? LOL.

I agree. If gope Cruz was the front runner the gopE would have come together. I can’t understand why you people can’t see that Cruz is NOT an outsider.

I’d refer to it as cult bigotry...not religious bigotry.

So unless there is a contested convention, the Establishment is powerless to influence elections?

I didn't say they were powerless. But at the end of the day, voters vote and give a clear mandate. That's what normally happens.

The party is the best vehicle we have for fighting the left. The Trump people got wrapped up in a fantasy and let their hate for their own party overrule their common sense.

Eventually you need to win an actual general election. That's the problem with the Trump messiah theory.

‘The party is the best vehicle we have for fighting the left.’

There is zero evidence of this. McConnell, Boehner-Ryan, and the rest have not fought the Left. Name one victory over Obama, of any magnitude at all, that they have secured after a hard fight.

“It shows that Ted has taken a hit from Trump’s smear campaign”

I’m sorry, you mean Trump calling him a liar ??? That’s your smear campaign??

The polls don’t lie, America doesn’t like your guy, and the more people learn about him, the more they will not like him.

Ted Cruz is not liked in Tampa Bay “AT ALL”. You can take that to the bank. If he can’t win here in Tampa, he can’t win Florida; that’s just a fact.

And if he can’t win Florida, he can’t win !!!!

I tried depersonalizing the issue in the hope of having a normal conversation with you.

Didn't work.

And I’ll cry if Trump gets the nomination for the exact same reason. So I know the feeling.

I am looking forward to Cruz going back to ambulance chasing. It’s funny you use the term butt boy, since cowardly Ted must be heavily invested in vaseline with all the grabbing of his ankles he does for your friends of the GOPe. Ted Cruz - fraud, coward, loser, herder of sheep.

Lord. We’ll be haunted by Cruz in 2020 when he loses to Hillary. Can we ever get rid of this guy?

This campaign has shown that people we had trusted to be stand up Conservatives are nothing more than first and foremost ....politicians. Period.

Lee probably just got orders from his donors to step up his support for Cruz. “Yes Sir”! said Lee.
