Sen. Mike Lee: Cruz wins on second ballot
The Hill's Briefing Room ^ | April 7, 2016 | Jessie Hellmann

Utah Sen. Mike Lee said he believes Ted Cruz would be the GOP presidential nominee if the convention is contested.

"On successive ballots, I think victory is more likely to go to Ted Cruz," Lee, who is a backer of the Texas senator, said during a radio interview Wednesday. "We have to remember that most Republicans around the country have voted for someone other than Donald Trump."

A convention would become contested if no candidate gets 1,237 delegates beforehand. On the first ballot, delegates are typically bound to the candidates their state picked in the primaries or caucuses. On subsequent ballots, however, many are released and can shift to another candidate.

"I would not be a bit surprised if Ted Cruz won in that circumstance, in fact, I'd be surprised if he didn't. On second ballots, on successive ballots, you're going to see more and more delegates moving to Ted Cruz," Lee said.

Donald Trump leads the pack with 743 delegates, followed by Cruz, who has 517, according to Bloomberg's count. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who left the race last month after a loss in his home state, has 171 delegates, followed by John Kasich, who has 143.

Cruz isn’t the frontrunner, due to Trump hysteria. Were Cruz or Rubio or anyone else in Trump’s position the party would have already come together.

Whatever you need to tell yourself to support your unwinnable candidate. Part of me hope Trump gets nomination just to show you true believers just how wrong you are about his electability. Mondale will be calling to offer condolences.

“Do you really think somebody with his resources cannot afford to influence 37 people of the hundreds there who do not hate him nor are in love with Cruz? it would Probably cost less then an ad buy…”

A comically obvious scenario to all but a Cruz zealot.

Not, that’s wrong. Most are people who have worked for party and formed relationships.

I understand your fantasies require this to be true. But, be honest, 2 weeks ago you didn’t understand that delegates can be chosen who don’t really support who they are bound to vote for in first round.

“Let’s say Trump goes in with 1200 delegates”

In the next few weeks Cruz will have no mathematical chance to win 1237. After that the whole narrative changes to a contested convention. The American public in the states going forward will start to ask themselves why they should support him and will take a closer look at who this man is.

His job will get increasingly harder to ramp up the support he needs.

It is illegal to buy a vote.

And think of it this way. How much would you charge to switch your vote from Trump to Bush?

I am guessing there is no amount of money that you would do that. Most people are like that.

You also forgot that many do not hate Trump nor are for Cruz. He will not need many...

Your “theory”...

Stop right there. I said "the" theory. I didn't say "my" theory.

... that “many” of them had Cruz as their second choice. A “theory” and “many”. That doesn’t make the stupid statement these people keep making anymore meaningful.

But, your post to me does show you think you’re smarter than everyone else in the room. If you and Cruz and Obama all ended up in the same room, how would you decide who’s the smartest? Eh, smart (ass) guy?

You were the one calling other people's statements stupid.

So when I respond to you by calling you a "smart guy", you have a problem with that??

LOL!.

Learn to give respect and then you will get respect.

If the voters don’t deliver a majority to any one candidate then there is no clear direction. Then the delegates have to do their jobs. If a candidate doesn’t win a majority then he hasn’t won.

They want to change the rules.

Trump is already cooked, his negatives + 100% name recognition, he has nowhere to go. Cruz OTOH is relatively unknown. Trump has been trying to drag him into the mud, but he isn’t a known quantity like Trump and Clinton.

‘The “voters” have picked in every election since 1976. That’s the last time a convention was open.’

So unless there is a contested convention, the Establishment is powerless to influence elections?

‘I an more comfortable with a pick by people who have invested time and effort for the party’

Because the party is corruption free, and has primarily the best interests of the country at heart. That’s why the country is in such great shape today.

“Lee, let me make a suggestion. Since MORE voters will have voted for Trump, why not just make him the candidate.”

Get to 1237 and it is moot. Until then it’s still a competition.

‘Cruz isn’t the frontrunner, due to Trump hysteria. Were Cruz or Rubio or anyone else in Trump’s position the party would have already come together.’

Who needs facts when you can simply say the words and [at least in your mind] they are true.

It’s called Magical Thinking. Obama does it too.

Well, a lot of people are like me. Trump dropped down on my list behind everyone but Pataki. If Rubio had remained and been a solid second, I’d switch from Ted to him, much as I loathe his Gang of 8 participation. That’s how far Donald has dropped in my estimation.
