Ted Cruz as the GOP’s nuclear option
The Boston Globe ^ | January 23, 2016 | Michael A. Cohen

Posted on 01/23/2016 1:24:19 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Back during the 1968 presidential campaign, Air Force General Curtis LeMay, who had been selected by third-party candidate George Wallace as his running mate, gave one of the most disastrous press conferences in US presidential campaign history.

He extolled the virtues of nuclear weapons, dismissed the American people's "phobia" about nukes, and said that it wouldn't make much difference to him if he was "killed . . . with a rusty knife" or "killed with a nuclear weapon."

Those words pretty much sum up the choice facing Republicans today. Donald Trump vs. Ted Cruz: a corroded blade vs. an atom bomb.

More and more, with establishment figures from Bob Dole and Orrin Hatch to Newt Gingrich and Rudy Giuliani siding with Trump, it seems that Republicans have come to the conclusion that Cruz -- not Trump -- is the equivalent to nuclear annihilation for the GOP.

On the surface, it seems almost unimaginable that a sane political actor could prefer Trump over any other potential nominee. His winning the nomination would surely cripple the GOP with minority voters, widen the gender gap among women (which already favors Democrats), and make the party look ridiculous by nominating a figure so clearly unqualified to be president....

No greater praise you can receive than for a left wing Boston reporter to write that you are “deeply unlikable.”

The media always wrote great things about McCain, all the way up until he received the Republican nomination.

I think it is because more and more people are starting to realize that Trump has the best chance to win the working class white vote that still stubbornly clings to the democrat party despite that party’s continuously sh!tting on them. I saw a poll not long ago that said that Trump has the chance of winning as much as 20 percent of the white vote away from the dems. Cruz’s appeal is to a much narrower slice of the electorate.

The object of this election is to actually win, not make highfaluting statements, and do down in flames. That’s why we need a candidate who is willing to fight the dems, whether its Clinton, Sanders, Biden or Warren, using their own tactics, and unafraid of going into full-blown attack mode. I personally don’t think Cruz has it in him to do that.

Dole is NOT for Cruz. Trump, to him, being the lesser of 2 evils.

I’m a Cruz guy but can live with Trump for a bunch of reasons. As can JimRob.

Lemay’s appraisal of nukes was correct. But it’s un-PC, so it must be wrong.

[Trump] would surely ... make the party look ridiculous by nominating a figure so clearly unqualified to be president .

I don't think we need worry about Trump's candidacy losing Michael Cohen as a potential future supporter of the conservative cause.

This liberal political hack is a fellow at The Century Foundation. He also served in the U.S. Department of State as chief speechwriter for U.S. Representative to the United Nations [that paragon of truthfulness] Bill Richardson and Undersecretary of State Stuart Eizenstat. He has worked at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and was chief speechwriter for Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT). He has also worked on political campaigns, both in the United States and overseas.

It's truly a badge of honor. Worthy of framing.

Unfortunately I have only voted FOR someone once, also and that was, like you, Reagan.
I am not happy with Trump, but if it were Bush or Kashich or Cristie I might stay home. I can vote Trump....but it would worry me. And like I said before you,Cruz is my guy....but....well we’ll see. Primaries haven’t started yet.

“...it seems that Republicans have come to the conclusion that Cruz — not Trump — is the equivalent to nuclear annihilation for the GOP.”

With Cruz voting along with the Republican establishment with TPA and the Corker bill, it would seem the Republican establishment is applying a bit of reverse psychology in their efforts to help their guy Cruz (since they can’t have their guy Jeb! or maybe Rubio).

Always good to hear what the BOSTON GLIB has to say. : )

“Reagan was 100% for TPA. Explain.”

No.

Just who does this sound like?

“During his 1980 campaign he spoke about the problems of the American auto industry, saying, Japan is part of the problem. This is where government can be legitimately involved. That is, to convince the Japanese in one way or another that, in their own interests, that deluge of cars must be slowed while our industry gets back on its feet. . . . If Japan keeps on doing everything that it’s doing . . . obviously there’s going to be what you call protectionism.”

This is a pull quote from a lengthy article complaining about Reagan’s protectionism —

The Reagan Record on Trade: Rhetoric Vs. Reality,

by: Sheldon L Richman, Cato Policy Analysis

His main complaint was that Reagan was all over the spectrum with rhetoric, but when it came down to action, he was protectionist. That is one of Reagan’s secret to his success of getting the economy roaring.
