Ted Cruz: Are Democrats Behind Trump's Citizenship Questions?
Texas Tribune ^ | Jan. 12, 2016 | Patrick Svitek

Posted on 01/12/2016 3:03:50 PM PST by Isara

HUDSON, N.H. — Ted Cruz on Tuesday went further than ever in needling Donald Trump, suggesting Democrats are behind the billionaire's questions about his citizenship.

Speaking with reporters after a rally here, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked what he thought of Trump citing Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe's analysis that Cruz might be ineligible to be president. Trump has pounced on Cruz's Canadian birth to cast doubt on whether he is a natural-born citizen.

“I will say it is more than a little strange to see Donald relying on as authoritative a liberal, left-wing, judicial activist Harvard law professor who is a huge Hillary supporter," Cruz replied. "It starts to make you think, ‘Gosh, why are some of Hillary’s strongest supporters backing Donald Trump?’"

Cruz then suggested Democrats were supporting Trump as a way of propping up a Republican they believe they can beat in the general election.

"You know, the last couple of elections, you’ll recall the Democrats got the nominee they wanted to run against in the general election," Cruz said. "It seems the Hillary folks are very eager to support Donald Trump and the attacks that are being tossed my direction.'"

The remarks represent Cruz's sharpest turn yet on Trump, whom he has refused to criticize for months, even as the billionaire has sharpened his attacks against Cruz. The two are now locked in a tight race in Iowa, the first-in-the-country caucus state.

Trump has been raising questions about whether Cruz is a natural-born citizen, which the Constitution requires for someone to serve as president. Cruz has insisted the legal question is straightforward: He argues his mother's U.S. citizenship (she's from Delaware) makes him a natural-born citizen, even if he was born in Calgary and his father is from Cuba.

Tribe, whom taught constitutional law to Cruz at Harvard, has said the issue is not as cut and dry, recently telling The Guardian that questions about Cruz's eligibility to be president are "murky and unsettled." Trump has favorably cited Tribe's analysis more than once, calling the professor a "constitutional expert, one of the best in the country," during a rally Monday in New Hampshire.

Tribe, viewed as one of the top liberal law professors in the country, has a long history of donating to Democratic candidates and causes. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cruz is back in the Granite State for the first time in two months. He plans to hold another event later Tuesday afternoon, a town hall in Londonderry.

Of the listed candidates, Santorum or Gingrich despite their issues. Because they had actual records with conservatism. They sucked but were not America hating liberals.

Yeah. I was a fan of Bachmann. Unfortunately, becoming leader of the free world also requires being able to present yourself as somebody that people will actually follow. It's a lot more than just compiling a list of policy positions that the farthest end of the base will agree with.

It's the words of the law of 1790 that matter, dhg.

The relevant portion says: And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens: Provided, that the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States:

At the time of his birth Cruz's father was either a Cuban or a Canadian living in Canada and pursuing Canadian citizenship. No way he had established an intent to be loyal to the USA.

So, by the laws of 1790 and 1795, George Washington would not have considered Cruz eligible for the presidency.

When you vetted your candidate (Cruz) did you determine the ratio of non-citizens to US citizens employed at his STATESIDE business locations
********************************************************************************
Yes, as best as I could tell, his employees are all citizens. I believe they have to be to work in a congressional office. Of course, at Trump’s stateside locations, you have to be constantly aware or you’ll trip over a non-American employee...there are so many of them.

That’s exactly what I hope he does in Thursday night’s debate. Trump knows this would go nowhere in court. It’s time to make Trump own it!

Speaking of the debate..

What are the chances one of the moderators asks Cruz directly.. “Senator Cruz, What is your definition of Natural Born Citizen?”.
He has already answered on at least two occasions, “Mother was a citizen” ..tour bus interview, and in a media interview, “Two citizen parents”...29, March,2015..

It was a link from an FR thread yesterday. I’m not bright enough to cut and paste, so try; NewswithViews.com, March 29, 2015. Article by J B Williams titled, “The End of The American Presidency”. Scroll down to the interview between a GOP staffer and Cruz..let me know if you find it..thanks.

Since this is not supported anywhere else and since Cruz is on video at around the same time saying the opposite, I’m very skeptical of this. It also doesn’t help that this author is a Trump supporter.

Like you, I’m skeptical of quite a few the “facts” floating around. My point is that his apparent contradictory statements are worth pursuing..at least ask for his definition..

(sorry I’m late)

Good grief. I *hadn’t* read all the way to the end. OOF This looks like it could get *real* ugly.

Here are 2 more links that may illuminate this article (thinking pre-emptively here)

This organization, which is the source of the timeline regarding the Cruzes, also sent a letter to Ted Cruz; asking that he reject running for president and call for the immediate resignation of 0bama because he shares the same circumstances.
Note the date: December 18, 2013
Instead, Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship A YEAR LATER.

http://northamericanlawcenter.org/call-honor-senator-ted-cruz/#.VpXTaEvxXws

and

There are those who will try to claim that Donald Trump only raised this issue because Cruz is ahead of him in the pre-caucus Iowa polls. Consider this:

On March 23, 2015- THREE MONTHS BEFORE TRUMP ANNOUNCED HIS RUN FOR PRESIDENT, NY Daily News published this article

Donald Trump calls Ted Cruz’s Canadian birth a ‘hurdle’ as presidential candidate

Yeah, he won't come out of the closet until the primary is over.

LOL.

Ted will be out of the closet and backtracking on immigration and probably on building a wall along the border long before the primaries are over.

He'll be singing the same, "Trump is so mean" song all the little guys in the race are singing in hopes of picking up their supporters. There could be pictures of Ted handing out Teddy Bears to illegal immigrants in his own commercials just any day.

This is a huge intellectual challenge:

Laurence Tribe v Ted Cruz.

Taking down Tribe could help strengthen constitutional interpretation, and Cruz might be the only one capable of completely discrediting him.

‘... the U.S. senator from Texas was asked what he thought of Trump citing Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe’s analysis that Cruz might be ineligible to be president...’

Rush has repeatedly hammered away at Professor Tribe — one of the most respected progessive sophist-leaders among the Ruling Class [and an arch-foe of the US Constitution].

Yes, Cruz is undoubtedly far smarter than Tribe, but Trump was right to quote Tribe because the man is so respected [beyond reason] that he gets way with all kinds of things and has spread venom in DC for decades with his constitutional opinions.

Until Tribe is discredited during this primary, Cruz has a problem, and an unfair one at that.

Ann Althouse took down Harvard law professor Lawrence Tribe’s pro-ObamaCare NYT op-ed in a trio of blog posts Tuesday. Althouse, herself a law professor, called out Tribe for trying to equate activity with choice, when there is a big difference. In fact, the cases refer to commercial activities, and a switch from ‘activity’ to ‘choice’ is immensely important in the health care litigation, in which opponents stress that the failure to buy insurance is inactivity, not activity, and therefore beyond even the broadest interpretations the Supreme Court has ever given to the Commerce Clause. joy. Barley is correct but its not just the liberals Its. the Texas GoPee. They are threatening to use an interview he did before becoming senator where he clearly states the requirements for natural born citizen. Did you not read the article posted yesterday. They are preparing to charge him with Fraud for not revealing his Canadian citizenship before running for Senate.

Its a mess and he needs to get a ruling before it completely ruins his entire political career. You know I’ve said repeatedly I want him to serve for life on SCOTUS. If he doesn’t deal.with it he is ruining his chance even there

Thought you miight find this interesting. While we all loathe and disagree with Professor Laurence Tribe and Cruz mocks him, still, Tribe must be deconstructed before the field is cleared for Cruz to be eligible by national consensus.

By the laws of 1790 and 1795, George Washington would not have considered Cruz eligible for the presidency. The relevant portion of the 1790 laws says: And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens: Provided, that the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States:

INCONVENIENT FACTOIDS

<><> At the time of his birth in Canada, Cruz's father was either a Cuban citizen, or a Canadian living in Canada, pursuing Canadian citizenship; he had not established an intent to be loyal to the USA and was actually listed w/ his American born-wife on the list of Canadian electors.

<><> Constitutional scholar, Ted Cruz, w/ two Ivy League degrees, including a law degree, has, no doubt, rigorously studied the issue of his citizenship down to the minutest detail.

<><> Cruz rightly says he is a US citizen but he surely knows he CANNOT be considered a natural born citizen; b/c he is a citizen by virtue of statute.

<><> Cruzs birth in Canada indicates he has THREE countries (The US via his mother, Canada his birthplace, and Cuba thru his father) having a legitimate claim on his allegiance from birth, whether he wanted it or not.

==============================================

The US Constitution and the rule of law must prevail. We should not yield to the same dark impulses of expediency and delusion that gave us the tyrannical sociopathic usurper demagogue Obama.

Choosing candidates who are creatures of the cult of personality has proved disastrous.

If we, the people, accept anything less than the constitution's original intent, frightening scenarios would unfold. Such as allowing the offspring of an American who joined ISIS and birthed a child in the Mideast w/ say, a Syrian, to claim eligibility for the office.

Cruz blasting anyone who dares say he isn't a citizen is very telling.
