Reagan and Cruz: Unelectable
American Thinker ^ | December 14, 2015 | Fritz Pettyjohn

For political veterans, much of what we're starting to hear about Ted Cruz has an eerily familiar ring. Too extreme. Unelectable. Scares people. A radical, not a conservative.

The American people will hear a lot about Cruz's extremism in the year ahead, just as they were told about Reagan’s. It may cause them to hesitate before supporting him. But over the course of the campaign, they'll be able to make that determination for themselves. In fact, Ted Cruz represents the mainstream of conservative thought in this country, just as Reagan did twoscore years ago. Reagan's victory vindicated everything we'd been saying for twenty years. A Cruz win next year would do so again.

Precisely 36 years ago, Reagan was on his way to the Republican nomination. George Will and the church ladies of the party were concerned, even trying to lure former President Ford into the race. Reagan was just too conservative to get elected. A few years earlier, Will had described Reagan's support as "kamikaze conservatives who thought the 1964 Goldwater campaign was jolly fun." The reasonable, establishment Republicans settled on Bush 1 as their candidate, and it was game on. Marco Rubio is, or will be, their choice this time. Same song, same singers....

“For political veterans, much of what we’re starting to hear about Donald Trump has an eerily familiar ring. Too extreme. Unelectable. Scares people. A radical, not a conservative.”

Now for most people, that is what you will likely hear more.

I support Cruz, but he’s no Reagan. I hope that he will be VP to Trump, or that Trump will appoint him to the Supreme Court. He’s brilliant.

Reagan had charisma and a presence.

Cruz is like the college professor lecturing from a podium...snorefest.

Reagan had a presence that went beyond politics. Cruz is DOA in a majority of the Blue states in the 2012 election.

Which is why he’s winning in Iowa and #2 in the national polls? Huh?

I was waiting for someone to say it. I well remember the primary season of 1976 and 1980. Reagan was deemed unelectable, and thus not to be nominated in 1976. Surprisingly, Gerald Ford nearly won the 1976 general ... nearly. The same arguments against nominating Reagan were heard in the 1980 season, and ...

Cruz is in no way unelectable.

And yet does little to inspire people to come out and see him. His crowds are what, 50% less than Trump, 75%?

Reagan was handsome, charming and engaging. Cruz is brilliant and an exceptional debater. They are not the same.

are we considering who can best lead this Nation, or who might best be able to entertain it?

He got elected as a underdog in the good old state of Texas.

They underestimate Cruz at their own peril.

Most Iowa polls and 20 points behind in one national poll. We have no national primary, by the way.

I would have to agree that being a distant second in a national race is hardly being competitive. Trump 41% and Cruz 14% just means Trump’s going to run away with it.

If you can't even turn your base out to come and see you speak, how are you going to attract enough voters in the general.

At least be honest with yourself enough to realize that Cruz's weakness is his narrower appeal than Trump.

When Ronald Reagan began to run in 1980 I was selling stuff door to door in my neighborhood. One of my clients was sort of a nut and she told me Reagan was the man to vote for. I remember having a moment like the professor in "Back to the Future" - Ronald Reagan, the actor?

I got to listening to him and I concurred that my nutty neighbor was right.

It seems that when people really listen to Ted they then begin to know.
