Oregon county commissioner Faye Stewart to run for US Senate
The Uniontown Herald Standard ^ | November 12, 2015

Faye Stewart, a county commissioner in Oregon, announced Thursday that he will seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.

The Lane County commissioner will try to win the May primary and oust Democratic incumbent Ron Wyden, who is heavily favored to win the general election. Republicans have not won a statewide race in Oregon since 2002.

Stewart said he is running because "our citizens are broken, and they need help." He said the federal government has neglected the needs of Oregon counties while running up debt and mishandling natural resources.

"We need all of Oregon strong and prosperous, not just one little portion," he said, referring to Portland.

Stewart, 48, of Cottage Grove, is a member of the family that owned the Bohemia Lumber Co. during the 20th century. The firm was at one time the nation's leading producer of laminated wood beams.

I don’t know much about Faye Stewart, but Land County usually votes Democrat and Cottage Grove is a working class city. Stewart may have cross-party appeal if he get enough funding.

I’m sure Eugene would do that to an otherwise sane county.

Too many California potheads moved to Oregon and destroyed the state.

"He said the federal government has neglected the needs of Oregon counties while running up debt and mishandling natural resources."

With all due respect to constitutionally low-information Mr. Stewart, he unsurprisingly does not seem to understand the following. Noting that I am not familiar with the counties that he wants to help, Mr. Stewart does not seem to understand that if corrupt Congress was not stealing taxpayer dollars though unconstitutional federal taxes that the people that Stewart wants to help would probably be more self-sufficient.

”Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” -Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

You may be correct, but what grounds do you have for your assertion? My initial instinct is that Clinton Fatigue’s assessment is more likely on the money, though one should note that the county elects five commissioners, each from a distinct district, and his district screams Republican. FWIW—while I am even farther from Oregon from you at the moment, I grew up two counties away from Lane, my mother grew up in Lane, and I still have loads of family in Lane county, primarily from within his district.

My dad grew up at Lorane. I think that is in his district.

Yep.

Mom grew up in Lowell, which is adjacent to Lorane in the alphabetized list. I have an Uncle who was Mayor there (Lowell), as well as family on that side in Dexter and Oak Ridge, and an Aunt and Uncle from Dad’s side who used to run a bar in Cottage Grove. I must confess, however, that I have no idea where Lorane is.

BTW—Did you know that Lane was VP on the Southern Democratic ticket in 1860?

Lorane is south west of Cottage Grove. They moved there in the early thirties and left after the war. Dad went through grade school in Lorane.

Looking at the district maps, I think that three of the five districts (East Lane, West Lane, and Springfield) ought to be winnable by Republicans, though the two Eugene districts are hopeless. If anyone on this thread is actually familiar with Lane County politics, I’d be interested in hearing what the actual reality is like.

My Mother’s folks were more up around the Salem area until after the war. In 2002 I hunted up the grave of a great-great grandmother who is buried in Salem at a church immediately adjacent to I-5.

Dad moved up from Oakland (Calif.) to Glendale (north of Grants Pass) in ‘51 to live with an Aunt and Uncle.

I wondered about that myself. Oh, well, if he likes his name, that’s all that matters.
