Sanders: We need 'sensible' gun-control bill

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is calling for "sensible gun-control legislation" in the wake of a mass shooting Thursday at a community college in Oregon.

"We need a comprehensive approach. We need sensible gun-control legislation which prevents guns from being used by people who should not have them," Sanders said in a statement. "We must greatly expand and improve our mental health capabilities so individuals and families can get the psychological help then need when they need it."

Sanders released his remarks after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning, killing 10 people.

The Vermont senator, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, added that the United States must also "tone down the incredibly high level of gratuitous violence" in the media.

"The shouting at each other must end. The hard work of developing good policy must begin," he said.

Sanders's comments echo remarks from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is also running for the Democratic nomination. Speaking after a campaign stop in Massachusetts, she called for "sensible gun control measures to save lives."

Any gun control legislation would face an uphill, if not impossible, battle in the Republican-controlled Congress.

A proposal to expand background checks from Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) failed to get the 60 votes needed in 2013 to overcome a procedural hurdle. A handful of the 54 yes votes were from Democratic senators who have since been replaced by Republicans.

Asked about taking up new gun control legislation earlier this year, Republican senators suggested instead that lawmakers should take time to reflect in the wake of a shooting, strengthen mental health services or crack down on cities that don't comply with federal immigration laws.

But Sanders suggested that Americans are "horrified by these never-ending mass shootings" and that Congress must try to "end this awful epidemic of senseless slaughter."

Sanders: We need 'sensible' gun-control bill

We need a sensible "lunatic control bill." We can start with all Democrat party officials.

Wow. I was thinking the exact same thing. “Sensible” is in the eye of the beholder.

No, we need sensible people. And that would start by elimination of political correctness, abolishing the dept of un-education and removing all corrupt politicians like you from office.

On second thought, maybe Bernie's got something here.

How about we create a bill requiring all school officials to be concealed carry licensees?

How about another law requiring any large gathering of people to have a certain percentage of them armed?

Sensible gun control laws:

Ban all semi-auto rifles.
Ban all semi-auto shotguns.
Ban all handguns.
Ban all rifles with more than a 5 shot capacity (10 shot for rimfire.)
Ban all shotguns with more than a 5 shot capacity.
Require all firearms owners to obtain an ID card.
Require all ammunition sales to be in person, with ID card checked.
Require background checks for all private firearms transactions.

Sounds reasonable to me.

How about a complete ban on gun ownership for all democrats, socialists and “progressives”...

Typical politician. Identify a problem, enact legislation to solve it. The fact is, legislation doesn't solve this problem. Just like outlawing murder doesn't stop murder.

This all makes the politician and his supporters feel like they're doing something to solve the problem but in actuality, they'll make the problem even worse.

This reminds me of a great statement that Dennis Prager said on Larry King many years ago when anti-gun advocates were saying guns were the problem. He said, "so what you're saying is that the Jews really had a problem with Sarin gas, not the Nazi's."

At which point Larry King was outraged by that statement and cut Prager's mike off.

Let’s ponder this:

Cars can kill people when driven by idiots...so.. auto insurance is mandatory. Insurance companies do background checks on your driving record and the DMV asks pertinent questions before issuing a tag or a license.

Make gun insurance mandatory and let the potential insurers do an in depth background check. It could rule out the crazies.

Israel learned a bitter lesson back in 1974 with the Ma’alot school Massacre. Now their teachers are armed with full auto Uzis and handguns.

Meanwhile we protect our students with a “THIS IS A GUN FREE ZONE” sign.

Meant to add. You have to show evidence of insurance before being able to purchase a gun.

Car insurance is mandatory to drive on public road. If you remain on private property, neither a license or insurance is necessary.

What law would have prevented this? Every weapon was bought legally with background checks.

The LEFT has control on practically every school campus in the United States of America - land of the 2nd Amendment. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE LEFTISTS?

This is a rhetorical question - I know what they want: TOTAL DISARMAMENT. The only problem with that is that if this fantastic Fed Gov, which have proved they cannot control what comes over the border, criminals will simple get guns that are illegaly crossing the border and all 310 million law-abiding citizens will be disarmed.

Folks, were are where Germany was in 1928.

In 1928, after a near decade of hyperinflation destroyed the structural fabric of the society, a rapidly expanding three-way political divide between the conservatives, National Socialists, and Communists prompted the rapidly declining conservative majority to enact the Law on Firearms and Ammunition. This law relaxed gun restrictions and put into effect a strict firearm licensing scheme. Under this scheme, Germans could possess firearms, but they were required to have separate permits to do the following: own or sell firearms, carry firearms (including handguns), manufacture firearms, and professionally deal in firearms and ammunition. Furthermore, the law restricted ownership of firearms to "...persons whose trustworthiness is not in question and who can show a need for a (gun) permit." This law explicitly revoked the 1919 Regulations on Weapons Ownership, which had banned all firearms possession.

"Shall not be infringed"

doesn't allow for any considerations of "sensibility" or anything else. It is absolute.

OK, Red Bernie, which of the 20,000 gun laws is not sensible.

And this from a guy who comes from a state where the only restriction on carrying a concealed firearm is that the bearer be older than 16 years of age.

you may have missed my addendum. ‘before purchasing a gun, one has to show evidence of insurance’

Not sure how many drivers only use their autos on private property - but to get a tag you have to show evidence of insurance and if it lapses, the ins.co. will notify DMV. DMV will require your tags be surrendered.

Good catch.

Looks like a scheme to deny ownership to persons who have any government-defined "nutjobs" in their immediate or extended families. Because, after all, those nuts might find a gun while waiting for the Thanksgiving turkey to finish cooking. You know how long those take.

"We need a comprehensive approach. We need sensible gun-control legislation which prevents guns from being used by people who should not have them," Sanders said in a statement. "We must greatly expand and improve our mental health capabilities so individuals and families can get the psychological help then need when they need it."

He should start with Congress. They drool all over themselves, immediately chanting and repeating the same worn mantra no matter how many laws they have already created. Mental cases, all.

Funny how they never wring their hands over the gun culture of the ghetto.
