Sanders: We need 'sensible' gun-control bill

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is calling for "sensible gun-control legislation" in the wake of a mass shooting Thursday at a community college in Oregon.

"We need a comprehensive approach. We need sensible gun-control legislation which prevents guns from being used by people who should not have them," Sanders said in a statement. "We must greatly expand and improve our mental health capabilities so individuals and families can get the psychological help then need when they need it."

Sanders released his remarks after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning, killing 10 people.

The Vermont senator, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, added that the United States must also "tone down the incredibly high level of gratuitous violence" in the media.

"The shouting at each other must end. The hard work of developing good policy must begin," he said.

Sanders's comments echo remarks from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is also running for the Democratic nomination. Speaking after a campaign stop in Massachusetts, she called for "sensible gun control measures to save lives."

Any gun control legislation would face an uphill, if not impossible, battle in the Republican-controlled Congress.

A proposal to expand background checks from Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) failed to get the 60 votes needed in 2013 to overcome a procedural hurdle. A handful of the 54 yes votes were from Democratic senators who have since been replaced by Republicans.

Asked about taking up new gun control legislation earlier this year, Republican senators suggested instead that lawmakers should take time to reflect in the wake of a shooting, strengthen mental health services or crack down on cities that don't comply with federal immigration laws.

But Sanders suggested that Americans are "horrified by these never-ending mass shootings" and that Congress must try to "end this awful epidemic of senseless slaughter."

It is almost as if all editors require "sensible" be prominently inserted into any trite, predictable, and shopworn story or quote they carry.
How droll to say, Senator Sanders.

Can anyone out there tell me of the LAST time a “sensible, sane, hardworking family man, fully vetted and having a legal license to own a gun, took said gun in hand and shot up a crowded ‘anything’?
It appears that the “mass shooters” of recent history all had backgrounds that just screamed “CAUTION—CAUTION!!”

A “sensible” gun bill would be one that doesn’t place defenseless citizens at the mercy of armed criminals.

Speaking of “sensible” or “common-sense” gun laws, how about a “common sense” nuke control bill — which would be the opposite of what the Obama administration and the Demorcrats and RINOs in congress have unleashed upon the world.

Dear Sanders,
guns were already banned where this incident occurred

ALSO, this is USA... ANY AND ALL gun control, limits, registration, licensing, background testing, applications, fees, restrictions ARE illegal, period. All dictators and dictator-wannabes try to impose firearms restrictions andto disarm their Sheeple/Slaves.

GTH you Commie Pr*ck!

America has become a lawless nation under Obama and his Democrats. Making more laws to ignore is just idiotic.

He means take guns from non-violent people and leave them in the hands of violent criminals so that they can waltz right in and take what they want from the honest people.

So after raising my taxes, stealing my freedom, talking down to me as they impose their will on me against my wishes, politicians now demand that I be disarmed?

He was a reliable anti-gun vote when his vote mattered, and a “pro”-gun vote when his vote didn’t matter. Instead of saying that his voting record is “mixed”, it would be more accurate to say that he had the voting record of a panderer.

He actually gets a lot right with this:

Mental health emphasis.

Gratuitous, desensitizing violence in the media.

Political environment that encourages winning by shouting down the other side.

I’d suggest addressing all three of those area first, and seeing how they work, before implementing even more gun control laws.

The school was a gun free zone.
They should of gave the school guard a switch at least.

Question:

This perpetrator was clearly mentally ill. But, was there any evidence of mental illness before now?

If we are to restrict people with documented mental illness from possessing firearms:

  1. What mental illness, or level of mental illness, disqualifies someone?
  2. Who makes the determination?
  3. What is the judicial process for this?
  4. What is the right of appeal?

There may be widespread agreement about the goal. But, what's the implementation?

And most importantly: would it have prevented this latest perpetrator from acquiring a firearm? If legislation is to be passed in response to this crime, then the legislation must be measured by whether it would be effective.

Piling onto your comments:

A "sensible" gun bill would eliminate "gun free zones" and stop creating killing fields for the psycho's.

“sensible health care reform” included men being required by punishment of law to buy coverage for pap smears, despite the fact that they don’t have a uterus.

keep that in mind when they use the word, “sensible”.
