Poll: Donald Trump leads GOP nationally, but Ben Carson gains

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump is expanding his strong lead over the other GOP presidential candidates nationally, according to a new poll, but Ben Carson is also posting a big jump in support.

In the first national Monmouth University poll out since the first Republican presidential debate, released Thursday, the real estate mogul is showing a commanding lead at 30% support. That's up 4 points from a poll taken just before the debate last month, but within the poll's margin of error.

It's also a new high for Trump, narrowly topping the 28% support he registered in a Quinnipiac poll late last month.

But Carson, a neurosurgeon, posted the biggest gain in support since August, jumping 13 points to second place. He is holding down 18% support now among Republicans. That continues a trend of recent polls that show him moving up the list.

It's also Carson's highest recorded number in a national poll, topping a 13% mark in a Fox news poll this spring.

Trump's lead also evaporates when the field is narrowed to just him and Carson. Asked about a head-to-head match-up between those two, Republican voters picked Carson over Trump, 55% to 36%.

Exactly! I also fear Dr. Carson being a good man. I fear he will fold with the Rhinos and the power to be Establishment. He does not have the fire in the belly to be aggressive like Donald Trump or Ted Cruz who both cannot be intimidated easily.

Trump’s high negatives will be his undoing,

Trump raised his favorability rating over 30 points in one month.

He's up against a ceiling though. As other candidates drop out support will become more focused on an alternative to Trump. He's saying a lot of astonishingly stupid things that will catch up with him, and he's taken a host of liberal positions over the years including on key topics like Obamacare.

I don't really understand why anyone from a conservative position would give him the time of day. It's telling that Bush has suffered the most from his rise, implying that they are trading voters from amongst the liberal wing of the Republican party.

I predicted in July that by November he'd fade. I'll stick with that prediction, because he doesn't seem to be learning or improving in his grasp or handling of the issues. I expect he'll be a non-factor by the time the primaries happen. Bush will be back as a more serious risk, so I guess my hope is that I'm partly wrong and Trump only partly fades and keeps Bush's support level down.

“How many times has Donald Trump gone bankrupt.”

Don’t know why your comment/question. The answer is Donald Trump has never gone bankrupt.

Correct, he has never personally declared bankruptcy. Some of his entities have, but that is quite different. I have done both personal and business bankruptcy fillings. Sometimes you have no choice and it is the only way to protect your interests when creditors refuse to cooperate.

Raise your hand if you believe a black man will be elected President in the next 150 years. Not gonna happen. Trump is the likely GOP nomimnee and will crush the Dem candidate.

Ted Cruz is my first, and second, choice. But, I’m thinking Ben Carson is the second choice for a whole helluva lot of people. Is it possible that we could have a Trump/Carson Ticket or would two non-politician outsiders be too much for the electorate to accept?

The media is down to using completely made up polling data. The idea that Carson would even register in a valid poll against Trump is laughable. Outside of the debates I have not seen or heard of the guy yet somehow Fox news had him ahead of trump in Iowa. That's some funny $hit right there. Total desperation.

How many times has Donald Trump gone bankrupt.

Trump did not go bankrupt. He stated at the debate that he filed bankruptcy for only 4 business out of hundreds of businesses.

Don't know about Carson..

Totally agree. These polls just reflect voter disapproval of all politicians. Ben Carson is not going to beat out Donald Trump for the GOP nomination.

Looks like Carson advocates in cities are willing to give up their semi-automatic rifles and pistols.

Carson and Trump only need to talk the way we want them to talk, then we would vote for them.

CNN is the far-left mouthpiece of liberals (RINO Establishment).

This is orchestrated by the GOP Establishment, Jeb in particular. They intend to split the Trump vote.

Team Jebs’ Newest Strategy – Push Ben Carson?…

Don't fall for it.

Whatever.

After nearly 13 years I’m about ready to walk away from FR because of the Messianic Trumpism.

Carson is intelligent....but just to nice & quiet to face & callout the evil of leftism for what it is - a failed satanic/communist cult.

He’s a likable guy and super smart but as you say, he just doesn’t have the toughness it takes.
