Senate passes fast-track trade authority for Obama, but House fight looms

Ater a lengthy debate, the Senate approved a contentious bill on Friday that would grant President Obama the power to speed up passage of trade deals, but a tougher battle is expected in the House.

The 62-37 vote to give the president so-called fast-track authority is a big boost for his top economic priority, bringing him closer to his goal of forging an ambitious Pacific free-trade accord known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

“Today’s bipartisan Senate vote is an important step toward ensuring the United States can negotiate and enforce strong, high-standards trade agreements,” Obama said. “I want to thank senators of both parties for sticking up for American workers by supporting smart trade and strong enforcement, and I encourage the House of Representatives to follow suit."

Fight?

As in pro-wrestling?

Like where they talk a whole bunch of smack in front of the camera, then get in the ring and do a nice little show with all sorts of amazing acrobatics and flips and sling shotting off the ropes at each other, then afterwards they all go to the same bar and get drunk and go back to their hotel room and pass around the groupies?

That type of fight?

I stop watching Fox about 3 weeks ago. O’Reilly is just too much of a pompous blowhard. Hannirt ust argues with everybody and Kelly is a little too liberal for me. I miss Jedediah and Kimberly and Andrea. Lol. But that’s the price you pay. I have seen arguments for and against this trade agreement on free public. I guess I just don’t understand it enough to know if it is good or bad for the country. I don’t know why you need agreements. Why can’t you just trade.

Five Republicans voted no: Susan Collins, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Jeff Sessions, and Richard Shelby. One Republican didn't vote: Mike Enzi.

The fact is, free trade is A Good Thing. Some people get screwed, but that's how the free market works. On balance, the country is much better off than it would have been if it had chosen to cripple itself to protect those who made wrong choices.

Admittedly, voting to trust Zero to do something right is a risk. But it's justifiable in this case. The senators who voted yea voted correctly.

The rules are, after the agreement is reached, it must be published in full for 60 days, after which Congress, having had an ear full, votes it up or down.

The bill imposes a list of requirements on Obama regarding the agreement. Hopefully, he'll adhere to them and thereby add a Trade Bill to his legacy. If not, then Congress should simply vote down the final agreement.

Yup. Look at Ted Cruz. Railed against the bill, admonished its secrecy and offered an amendment to stop the import of illegal aliens (after voting to move the bill forward).

Cruz then votes to end debate. His amendment goes down in flames. The bill remains secret.

So what does Cruz do on the final vote?

He votes FOR it!!

If Obama supports it you know it’s bad for America. That’s all I need to know.

Correct this is totally about trusting obama not trade.

That's why Congress has to approve the final agreement 60 days after it's published.

Zero has a choice. He can conclude a genuine free trade agreement and add it to his meager legacy as President. Or he can slip some Progressive hacks into it and have it voted down by Congress, leaving his miserable legacy all the more barren!

The Senate correctly chose to bet that he'll choose to generate a clean free trade agreement. If they're wrong, the mistake is easy to fix. Then, it's on to 2017 ...

What I want to know is: Will the contents of the bill be read and understood before it is voted on? Apparently, in the Senate, the answer was “no.” How about the House?

Our trade deficit grows with each trade deal. That’s not good on “balance”.

Oh no! Cruz sold us out! He isn’t 100% what you want and you have an agenda!

I guess I will have to go vote for someone else since Cruz lost my vote. /sarc

That bill should be available to be read and published in public so that we know what's in it. Without that, voting in its favor is not acceptable.

The only thing the bill has been good for is outing the supposed Constitutional Conservatives in the US Senate. Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and Jeff Sessions voted against it. All of our other faves who were singing our tune during election season backstabbed us.
