Rand Paul: College tuition should be a tax writeoff
The Washington Post's Post Politics ^ | April 11, 2015 | Katie Zezima

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Sen. Rand Paul called Friday for college tuition to be a tax writeoff in his first direct pitch to young voters of his presidential campaign.

Paul used the power of the pocketbook, along with calls for electronic privacy and reforming the criminal justice system, to appeal to what he called the "Instagram generation," a constituency he sees as vital to his nascent presidential campaign. Paul blasted President Obama's plan for free community college, telling the crowd of a few hundred people, mostly students, that it won't work because someone has to pay for professors and facilities.

"Let's let college students deduct the entire cost of their educations over their working careers. Let's make college tuition entirely deductible," Paul said. Paul did not elaborate on how this would happen and his campaign did not return a request for comment....

This idea violates the Ten Commandments and the U.S. Constitution.

“Thou shall not steal.”

This amounts to taking money from one group of people, taxpayers, at the point of a gun, and handing it another group, students. That’s robbery.

“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.”

— James Madison, the father of the U.S. Constitution

No way. We should be moving in the opposite direction of what he is suggesting. For starters, dump the mortgage interest deduction. I have no mortgage, why should I be subsidizing people who do?

a simple flat or fair tax would be a lot better, methinks.

1. when the Income tax was created, the campaign for adopting it promised that ‘the average working man will not pay a dime in income tax!”... it was pitched as an attack on the steel and oil and railroad millionaires, that is the One Percenters, only

ALSO, the tax filing form really did fit on the back of a post card.

“Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.”
When Rand said that back in June of 2013, he revealed a strong preference for big government, never mind a weak stance on protecting our borders.

Well truth is I alway view education as capital investment I’m looking for return on....

im a computer systems network engineer I have no college degree but make 6 figures..

.it’s been all technical training and certifications ..

And no matter if im permanent or contract employee with the company I always see myself as an independent business... my knowledge and expertise is my product ..a service I sell

I have to do this another round of classes coming up..two grand... for new education as the technology moves on. average I roll around 5 to 10 per year back in books and training per year.

My knowledge is my tools to do business with.... so any training class is a capital investment ...but before I commit to it I have to evaluate what kind of return i will get out of it

I would rather help pay for 2 years of college than a life time of welfare.

Is that the choice you want to impose on us, pay for you to go to college, and if so you will work, or if not, then we pay you welfare because you don’t want the work that you get without a degree?

Like this ?

They ( Rand Paul supporters ) will defy us and say that the media is out to get him and trying to smear him with something he didn’t say, or those aren’t his words or views...

It’s socialized education no matter how you look at it and sticking it to the older working tax payers....

Wonder why the Rand Paul supporters are quite on this one ? Perhaps it makes him look bad and another big government candidate...

RandyPaul Care : Socialised Free Collage Education... Paid for by hard working older tax payers...

They can’t defend that one...

I'm tired of progressives using tax code to promote ideas.

Eliminate the corporate tax. A flat 15% on income.

They could at least expand the student loan interest deduction.

Firstly you can only deduct up to $2500 per year and secondly once your income gets too high it’s eliminated entirely.

My daughter took loans, got an education, has an excellent job and now she can’t deduct her interest. If she had taken basket weaving and was working at starbucks, she wouldn’t have that problem

So, it’s a bit bait-and-switchy, imho.
