I have to wonder if the security detail he hires for those sorts of trips have any loyalty to him what so ever, or if they just say to themselves ‘screw it, he’s got the money’. Then again, perhaps he uses foreign security who are all to happy to see a U.S. senator meeting with terrorists.

I don't recall that joke but I like it - adaptable to current/future events.

At one time Flake was a fairly decent and conservative congressman before he got pulled into McCain's orbit. This is the main problem of politicians like McCain: they not only provide bipartisan cover to screw up the country, but they capture and corrupt otherwise promising political leaders and either neuter them or turn them into part of the problem.

Lindsey Graham is another such example.

I’m not even 60 and I remember Goldwater well. He was the only presidential candidate for whom my father put on a bumper sticker. Dad liked Reagan as well, but no bumper sticker. It could’ve been because he knew Reagan was going to win our state in a landslide, 64% in 1980, 65% in 1984.
