Beloved Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder on Thursday endorsed Sen. Pat Roberts for re-election and is appearing in a new television ad for the three-term Republican incumbent, potentially giving the GOP a boost in a race with national implications.

Roberts’ campaign launched the statewide spot just five days before the election, which has Roberts locked in a tough contest with independent candidate Greg Orman, a 45-year-old Olathe businessman and co-founder of a private equity firm.

Snyder is highly respected throughout the state and college football and has largely remained aloof from politics....

I’ve always liked the old coach. He’s the only coach I’ve ever seen always run out onto the field when one of his players gets hurt. I’ll root for my Baylor Bears to beat K-state, but they’re my second choice.

Lou Holtz was run off from Arkansas for appearing in a campaign ad for Jesse Helms. And believe me, that’s the real reason he left. They said it was because there as a University sign in the background.

At the moment, I cannot think of a more important endorsement for Roberts. Coach Snyder is immensely popular in this state, and his vote of confidence will carry influence with many, I gotta believe.

Who knows? But honestly if the deciding factor on who you vote for is the endorsement of a college football coach, not Palin or Cruz or Bush or Dole, then you're pretty hopeless to begin with.

And as someone else said, the KU alums won't care what Bill Snyder has to say.

The Jayhawks have a football team?

I think it helps because Snyder is more trusted and liked than most politicians.

My boyfriend is a K-State alum so I've gotten a chance to watch their games over the past few years. Bill Snyder is a class act, probably one of the best coaches in the game. He coaches disciplined teams. He gets the most out of his players, often more than they thought they had in them. His players either sign on for his way of doing things or they hit I-70 bound for somewhere else. His concern for his players is legendary. As a result he has successful programs and his players swear by him and are totally devoted to him.

I'm not saying it won't help. I'm just saying it makes about as much sense as people who say they voted for Obama because Brad Pitt liked him.

We once had governance by the Divine Right of Kings and hereditary succession. That was replaced with election of people who had demonstrated their experience and expertise in other walks of life and who served as their civic duty.

Both of these categories have passed into the history books. We are beset these days with professional politicians who argue their entitlement to office based on their intellectual superiority, their celebrity status, or both. We are doomed.

Synder’s endorsement will help Roberts. The new ad about Orman’s hedge fund connections will probably be a bigger factor. Amazingly, there are still voters out there who think that Orman is an Independent who may choose to caucus with the Republicans if that’s what’s good for Kansas. Democrat voters know better.

As a Bama fan, I will opine that Coach Snyder is one of the best ever. He ranks in the Top 5 all time coaches in college football - at least in my book.

Bill Snyder is a class guy, he is the reason K-State is where they are.

He apologized for that endorsement yesterday; said it was a mistake. See the story here:
