LONDON (Reuters) - Jack Neal briefly became the proud owner of a pink convertible car after he managed to buy it for 9,000 pounds ($17,000) on the Internet despite being only three years old. Jack's mother told the BBC she had left her password for the eBay auction site in her computer and her son used the "buy it now" option to complete the purchase. "Jack's a whizz on the PC and just pressed all the right buttons," Rachel Neal said. The seller of the second-hand car, a dealer from Worcestershire, central England, was amused by the bid and agreed...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court debated the rights of inventors Wednesday, weighing in on a dispute between eBay and a small Virginia patent holder. The case's outcome could mean millions of dollars for inventors working in their garages or in large pharmaceutical labs - including those who develop a product and those who opt only to patent ideas. The dispute between eBay, the Web-based marketplace, and MercExchange is one of several high-profile legal battles that are calling attention to the nation's patent laws, which some critics - including Amazon.com, Yahoo! and Xerox Corp. - say need updating to keep...

INDIANAPOLIS - A federal grand jury indicted an Indianapolis man on charges he auctioned vintage muscle cars that he did not own on eBay and then had partners rob would-be buyers at gunpoint when they came to pick up the vehicles. Dewan A. Horne, 24, spent Wednesday night in the Marion County Jail, where he was being held for U.S. marshals. The alleged accomplices were still at large, U.S. Attorney Susan Brooks said in a news release Wednesday. The indictment alleges that Horne would direct out-of-state buyers to a garage on the east side of Indianapolis, where two masked gunmen...

A Southern California man who sold the skull of a Hawaiian woman from the 18th century to undercover agents on eBay was charged on Wednesday with a federal crime. Jerry David Hasson advertised the skull on the Internet auction service eBay as that of a "200-year-old warrior" who died on Maui in the 1790s, prosecutors said, and sold it in February to an undercover agent with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. An analysis showed that the skull belonged to a woman who lived on the Hawaiian islands sometime before 1778 and was about 50 years old when she died, said...

Diana Duyser, of Hollywood, put the sandwich up for sale last week, drawing bids as high as $22,000 before eBay pulled the item Sunday night. The page was viewed almost 100,000 times before being taken down. An e-mail Duyser received from eBay said the sandwich broke...

Police warn of rising Ebay fraud Last Updated Sat, 13 Sep 2003 11:23:21 EDMONTON - Police in Alberta are joining forces with their colleagues in the U.S. to fight crime that knows no borders: Internet and telephone fraud. Alberta will be joining B.C., Ontario and Quebec, which already have agreements with U.S. authorities to share information. The main focus will be call-centre fraud in Canada targeting Americans, but police are hoping the co-operation will allow joint investigations in Internet crime. One area of Internet crime that is growing is fraud involving the online auction site Ebay. Users of the site...

WASHINGTON -- State and federal officials are cracking down on online-auction fraud, with arrests to be announced in several states Wednesday and lawsuits against alleged con artists preying on eBay and other sites.

The effort by the Federal Trade Commission and more than two dozen state attorneys general is intended to fight what officials say is a rising tide of Internet fraud. Nearly half of them involved online-auction fraud, according to a study by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- On eBay, the highest bid wins -- unless the item on sale is a laser printer from CompAtlanta and the bidder happens to be Canadian. That's what a tax consultant discovered last week when he tried to buy a printer on eBay, but was refused by the vendor when it was discovered he lived in Vancouver. David Ingram received notification that his winning bid of $24.50 had been canceled, along with this message: "At the present time, we do not ship to, or accept bids from, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany or any other country that does...

eBay, ever anxious to up profits, bends over backward to provide data to law enforcement officials"I don't know another Web site that has a privacy policy as flexible as eBay's," says Joseph Sullivan. A little bit later, Sullivan explains what he means by the term "flexible." Sullivan is director of the "law enforcement and compliance" department at eBay.com, the largest retailer in the world. Sullivan was speaking to senior representatives of numerous law-enforcement agencies in the United States on the occasion of "Cyber Crime 2003," a conference that was held last week in Connecticut. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Teresa Smith discovered Internet auctions in a big way about two years ago, selling $800,000 worth of Apple Macintosh (news - web sites) computers through sites such as eBay and AuctionWorks. Like thousands of other small-time entrepreneurs, Smith found that online auction sites could expand her reach and connect her with customers from Hawaii to Switzerland. Soon she was hiring employees and tooling around Boston in a new Ford Mustang convertible. While Smith certainly cashed her customers' checks, unfortunately, she rarely bothered to send out the computers they had paid for. Smith admitted in court in November...

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Internet trading leader eBay Inc. increased its shift toward fixed-price sales Monday by launching a new format that lets buyers and sellers skip traditional auctions entirely. EBay, which began as an auction-only site, already facilitates instant sales of items, both through Half.com, a site it acquired in 2000, and through the ``Buy It Now'' option, which accounts for one-third of all items listed on eBay. With ``Buy it Now,'' sellers can list an item at a set price, and the sale ends if someone offers to pay that price. If someone enters a bid below...

Ebay is trying to make it difficult for me to get back my $8 Final Auction Value fee. The buyer used "buy it now" to win an auction on a $325 item and never paid. Buyer had zero feedback and lived in Hungary. This goof ruined my auction. I want to hold onto this item for a few more months anyhow now but the auction was never consummated so I want my money back. Ebay seems to insist on a month long song and dance charade before they do right by me. Of sending this no-show buyer e-mails. And maybe ...
