Perspectives, Values and Attitudes
Among U.S. Ethnic Groups
Revealed in Groundbreaking Book:
"What Ethnic Americans Really Think:
The Zogby Culture Polls"

Jewish Americans most liberal;
African Americans most proud of heritage, most
discriminated; Asians, Hispanics, Arabs most supportive of global trade;
Italians, Hispanics less likely pro-choice supporters;
All groups oppose racial preferences in hiring/college
The complex nature of the American society has never been
more apparent than findings from surveys of America's six
major ethnic groups, all detailed in the just released
book: "What Ethnic Americans Really Think: The Zogby
Culture Polls."

On Sale Now!

In an effort to better identify the views and attitudes
among America's diverse ethnic makeup, Zogby International
one-year ago embarked on a massive project to analyze six
distinct and diverse ethnic communities: African
Americans, Asian/Pacific Americans, Hispanic Americans,
Jewish Americans, Italian Americans and Arab Americans.

The compelling, often shocking results comprise: "What
Ethnic Americans Really Think: The Zogby Culture Polls,"
written by James J. Zogby, Ph.D., published by Zogby
International, with results presented during a May 24th,
2001 news conference at the National Press Club,
Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by the National Italian American Foundation and
the Center for Study of Culture and Values at Catholic
University of America, the new book features unique
insights into how many ethnic groups in America's cultural
melting pot differ on such issues as politics, health
care, consumerism, race relations and stereotypes and the
emotional bond with their heritage. At the same time, the
book reveals how members from those vastly different
cultural backgrounds are in many instances, in agreement.

The book details, for example, how Jewish Americans have
the highest percentage among the ethnic groups of those
earning at least $50,000 annually (59%), compared to Asian
Americans (56%), Arab Americans (49%), Italian Americans
(48%), African Americans (27%) and Hispanic Americans
(20%).

Other Highlights from "What Ethnic Americans Really Think:
The Zogby Culture Polls" include:

None of these American ethnic groups support using racial
preference in hiring or college admissions, including
African Americans and Hispanic Americans.

Jewish Americans (18%) are least likely to attend
religious services at least once a week, compared to 43.8%
of Italian Americans, 52.9% of Hispanic Americans and
46.8% of African Americans.

African Americans (71.8%), Jewish Americans (58.9%) and
Asian Americans (57.4%) have experienced discrimination
because of ethnic heritage in greater numbers than Italian
Americans (26.9%) or Arab Americans (39.1%).

A majority of Hispanic Americans (60.8%) would ban
abortions except in cases where the mother's life is in
danger, compared to 46.8% of Italian Americans, 44.2%
of
African Americans, and 20.7% of Jewish Americans.

Majorities of all ethnic groups favor treating 11-13 year-
olds as adults who use a gun in a crime, including African
Americans (52.5%), Hispanic Americans (55.8%) and Arab
Americans (61.2%).

Asian Americans (71.7%) and Jewish Americans (70.7%) are
more likely to have access to the Internet, compared to
54.4% African Americans, 46.4% Hispanic Americans, 64.9%
Italian Americans and 64.3% Arab Americans.

Asian Americans (68%) and Hispanic Americans (65.5%)
significantly trail the other ethnic groups in voter
registration. More African Americans (90.1%), Italian
Americans (88.6%) and Arab Americans (88.7%), are
registered voters.

Jewish Americans most liberal;

*ahem* Now where were all those folks who just tore into me because I said that "Most American Jews are not religious, and that's why they're so liberal"?

Time to eat some crow (kosher, of course).

African Americans most proud of heritage, most discriminated;

TRANSLATION: Most demagogued...

Asians, Hispanics, Arabs most supportive of global trade;

And for a very simple reason: To these people, "global trade" is a personal thing. They tend to import from "Tio Paco" or "Honorable First-Cousin" and sell here in their adopted country.

Italians, Hispanics less likely pro-choice supporters;

Predominantly Roman Catholic. For all it's problems, the R.C. church remains committed to certain principles including the Right to Life.

All groups oppose racial preferences in hiring/college

Why the Republicans don't take advantage of this fact to lambast the Democrats I'll NEVER know.

As a double minority, I am mortified that the opinions of my groups were not even included in this article. We shouldn't be pitting one minority against another minority.

That's discriminatory, and they haven't heard the last of what happens when you mess with Swedish-Americans and with English-Americans. If you have never been called "dumb Swede" you cannot possibly know how it feels.

Zogby was e-mailing me for several weeks, to do a poll derived from Internet users. I consistently answered straight conservative/Republican/Bush. They dropped me.

10.000 SWEDES................... did what in the weeds.
My uncle Jensen told me that one. The over 60
group are brutal to each other.

You'd never guess this from the behavior of Hispanic voters in California. Pro-life candidates and even pro-life advocates have failed to connect with too many prospective supporters.

I'd expect high numbers among any group sufficiently dedicated to emigrate and resettle in significant numbers in another land. But I'd also remember the source of those numbers as well, and double check to be certain that they're at least in the same ballpark from multiple sources, such as recent census data:

From Zogby website [press info]

Transcript: CNN Newsnight Aaron Brown

Aired February 26, 2002 - 22:00 ET

Joining us to talk about some of these numbers and more, a prominent pollster and an Arab American, John Zogby.

John, nice to see you again.

JOHN ZOGBY, PRESIDENT AND CEO, ZOGBY INTERNATIONAL:
Good to see you too, Aaron.

I was wondering where we were in this poll.
I guess, just like in Blazing Saddles,

"We'll take the [Black Americans] and the [Chinese Americans], but we don't want any Irish!"
