'Africanizing' of names brings protest

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - Residents of South Africa's Northern Province were never entirely pleased by the name of their corner of the country. "Northern" was not descriptive enough to capture the beauty of this land of baobab trees, game parks and sun-filled days, people complained. In fact, it said close to nothing about their home.

So provincial authorities announced last month that they would rename the province Limpopo, after the "great, grey-green, greasy Limpopo River," celebrated by Rudyard Kipling, that forms South Africa's border with Zimbabwe.

Many thanks for your post. The white Afrikaners, in South Africa, are MORE South African, theen the coloreds ( Indians and other Asians ) and many of the blacks, who came to that area much LATER than they did.

"More than 300 years ago, the African was subjugated to colonial rule. In the process, we lost everything, including our right to our own names,"

OK. Go through your written archives and tell us what names you used.

When I was in Port Elizabeth in 1975, I came to an intersection that had, A Mobil station, a Chevrolet dealer, and a Kentucky Fried Chicken joint. I wonder what they will rename those establishments.

The Delaware indians threw a hissyfit when Philadelphia changed the name of Delaware Avenue to Columbus Avenue.

So did my ex-girlfriend, it was her favorite place to go party. I must say there were some fun places along the river.

"More than 300 years ago, the African was subjugated to colonial rule. In the process, we lost everything, including our right to our own names," the premier of the province, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, told the provincial legislature last month. "With that our sense of self-esteem suffered a massive blow. Part of the task of the liberation struggle is to regain the humanity of the Africans, including their right to call themselves by their own names."

Uh, I believe that, with the exception of the Zulu people, there were no blacks in what is now South Africa when the whites first arrived. The whites and Zulus have always gotten along.

On a far worse ( BIGGER ) scale.

Zimbabwe did this to herself; what happened to South Africa, was foisted upon them by the UN and Western Liberals !

The Zulus were the most " civilized " ; for want of a better word. There WERE other blacks there, the Bushmen , the Xhosa ( mostly as slaves to the Zulus , but brought in AFTER the Afrikaners came ) , and a few others. They were NOT ; however , on most of the lands that the Afrikaners settled.

Many South African blacks, who live there, today, are immigrants from OTHER African countries.

Yes, until very recently ( and ONLY because of ANC thuggery, lies, and Communist tactis ! ) the Zulus have ALWAYS sided with the Afrikaners ! Now, some Zulus have, unfortunately, been wooed away / tortured / etc. to be aligned with the damned ANC. It IS a hodrrid mess.

Now, eight years later, South Africa is following the path of African nations that sought a new image after gaining independence from colonial powers. Rhodesia, upon gaining independence from Great Britain in 1980, became Zimbabwe

And we all know what a happy place that is!

True, and the ANC has only been at it since 1994; whereas Mugabe has been at for over 20 years !

I wonder if the writer was aware of the faux pas in stating that South Africa was trying to be more like Zimbabwe??
