Copies of California Patriot Stolen; Publication Staff Allegedly Harassed
Break-In May Be Reaction to Article in February Issue

Police at UC Berkeley are investigating the theft of 3,000 copies of the California Patriot, a conservative campus monthly, as well as the alleged harassment of the publication's distributors.

The bulk of the papers were stolen during a break-in at the Patriot office in Eshleman Hall late Monday night. The loss is estimated to be between $1,500 and $2,000.

Patriot Editor Kelly Thomas said there is no definitive way to pinpoint the thieves' identities. But others on the Patriot staff said the theft was likely in response to an article in the just-released Patriot that calls the Mexican American student group MEChA a "student funded hate group."

The article, "MEChA: Student Funded Bigotry and Hate," blames the group for impeding "advances in civil rights toward a colorblind American society" through "anti-American hate" and "a mentality that leads its adherents to believe anyone who is white and male is to blame for any historical injustice."

MEChA is a national student movement that concentrates on political, social, educational and cultural issues that pertain to the Chicano movement.

Patriot staff and members of the closely affiliated Berkeley College Republicans also said they were surrounded and harassed Tuesday as they handed the publication out on Sproul Plaza.

A flier circulated around campus Tuesday falsely attributed to the college Republicans statements opposing any investigation into the collapse of Enron.

Some members of the staff received death threats, though that is nothing new to members of the two groups.

"We talk about controversial issues, and we take controversial stances," Thomas said. "But we are open to debate about those issues, and that is the whole point. It is not to squelch one side or the other."

The Patriot filed a report with police yesterday, but police officials have little information about the investigation, which is still in its infancy.

"The issue is free speech on campus. You may not agree with us, but Jesus, let us say it," said Robb McFadden, chair of the college Republicans.

MEChA denies any involvement in the incidents and "condemns harassment," said Livia Rojas, a leader in the group.

Thomas said there is likely no way for the Patriot to recoup its losses because the press run was not insured.

The Patriot is a nonprofit group, funded entirely by private donations.

Copies of The Daily Californian have twice been reported stolen in the past year, following the publication of material some groups of students deemed controversial.

Speeches on campus sponsored by the college Republicans and the Patriot have also twice been cut short when audience members became unruly during the talks.

Last March, a talk by conservative writer David Horowitz about reparations ended abruptly when a member of the audience engaged in an argument with Horowitz.

But McFadden said he thought students on campus moved beyond censorship in the days following Sept. 11, when both groups opposing and supporting the U.S.-led war on terrorism shared the steps of Sproul Hall to demonstrate.

"I thought we were beyond this. It is just so shocking and immature," he said.

Chancellor Robert Berdahl has in the past defended the importance of a free exchange of ideas, including at a campus vigil the week after the September attacks.

"Truth can only be approached, it can only be realized, by the exercise of free and open conversation, a discussion free of rancor, a discussion liberated from the strictures of dogma, a discussion emancipated from the demands for the acquiescence of others," he said.

(From the linked article)

"Would it be possible to imagine a government-funded student group at Berkeley that proclaimed that there exist “wetback invaders,” “gook invaders” or “nigger invaders”? No, it is not. It is unthinkable. There is no question that this type of hateful rhetoric would not be tolerated under the regime of the autocratic “pedantocracy” at UC Berkeley. Yet under the guise of Mestizo cultural identity, racism against Anglos (regardless of ancestry) is indoctrinated, funded and taught in the classrooms. It is no secret that the word “gringo” is racial slur, the equivalent of “nigger,” “gook” or “wetback.” Surprisingly though, the continued use of the racial slur “gringo” is also not only tolerated, but promoted and indirectly funded at Cal, a public University. In the words of the politically correct, doesn’t this create a “hostile learning environment” at one of the nation’s most prestigious universities? Apparently, some epithets are protected, while others are not. "

My oldest daughter is on the staff of "Broadside", the conservative political publication of NC State University (privately funded, vs. the so-called black publication on campus that receives MAJOR government/university funding each year and publishes total garbage.....mainly reprinted articles; Broadside has won multiple national awards for journalism).

This is far more common than most realize. Our universities are dens of unchecked, funded liberalism. WE all know how "liberals" hate debate. You either agree with them or you're a racist, a homophobe (STILL don't "get" that one....), or worse. Libs are the antithesis of free-speechers, and it's time they're exposed as such.

"Libs are the antithesis of free-speechers, and it's time they're exposed as such."

. . .it is the 'party line' or none at all.

The evil of Liberalism rides on the 'good' promised in it's lies. . .

. . .pathetic that the old 'fool me once. . .fool me twice' does not apply to the world followers of this amoral; anti-moral, anti-freedom dogma cloaked in a rhetoric that obscures the truth of Liberal dogma.

It is very clear from this incident and others that there are two political polar opposites operating in this country today. One fights its battle with the truth, disseminated as widely as possible. The other groups uses lies, obfuscation, and censorship. It's not hard to affix the labels to each group.

Your statement reminded me of what one journalist wrote about the former mayor of Atlanta, Bill Campbell. He said in Campbell's mind, there are three types of people... supporters, racists, and Uncle Toms.

After reading about MEChA I just might want to get rid of my ideas of egalitarianism, universalism, democracy, tolerance & diversity, and go get one of those relics of the Cold War they are talking about on another thread. From what I read in that article an AK is accurate out to 1000 yards and by sounds of it that is about as close as I want to come to a MEChAista.

MEChA denies any involvement in the incidents and "condemns harassment," said Livia Rojas, a leader in the group.

But they are free to harass anyone who doesn't agree with them. Nope, there is no longer free speech on campuses because they are infiltrated by the socialists and their socialist agenda.

I am very proud of any college kids who can stand against the PC tide on campus, and most of all the independent newsies who put their name on "racist sexist homophobic" articles.

You are free to say anything that is not racist, sexist, homophobic or xenophobic.

IOW, you agree or you shut up.

I not only bookmarked this thread, I downloaded that linked article so that I could make a hard-copy of it. My kids are going to read this before choosing a college. I'd recommend that everyone download and copy. If the 'editors' want copyright money, I'll gladly donate!
