I know what you're saying. Stilll, there has got to be some stopping point or slowdown in the immigration process. In California, you can see the beiginnings of a dysfunctional society, a small amount of super-rich living in gated communities, lots of poor and a fleeing middle-class. I would'nt want that scenarioto happen to the rest of America. It's depressing.

The illegals are a threat to our security? WOW! What a news flash!
"The government finds that illegal immigrants are a threat to our national security. In other news, scientists discover that the surface of the sun is hot."
Give me a friggin' break.

I do not believe that this nation will be a major player in the world much longer. The last sentence states it all, "The defense of the nation begins with the defense of its borders."
This nation no longer controls its own borders. We take orders from the UN to allow in whomever THEY deem we should. And our national boundaries are porous sleeves through which anyone or anything can slip.

I agree with you 100%. There should be reform. My point is simply that all immigrants should not be subject to disdain. I think Bush would be smart to create an "Amnesty package" that includes better border controls and Visa's being more restrictive.

There should be immigration but something on the order of 250,000 per year and it should be skill-based. The immigrants will help the country, not harm it. The number will be small enough that it does not have a severe demographic impact on the "native" population, as it does now.

Step One: Stop present and future illegal immigration. New ones get sent back, pronto.

"58,000 Middle Eastern men from countries other than Israel are residing illegally in the United States"
I believe there is more than this living in NJ.

"There should be reform." No, there should be enforcement of the current laws.
Granting ANY kind of amnesty only encourages further abuses. (See the 1980s)

Someone got paid to find that out? How much? I sure would like to bid on that contract!! Yes, it is like paying someone to tell them the reason why they trip and fall so much is because their shoes are untied.

The question is, will Banana Republicans still want to give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, and ignore the major issue of illegal entry on our southern border? Past history suggests that the republicans for Amnesty also, by their silence, are for open borders.

Joe, with these party types it is all about winning elections at all costs whatever the consequences. They seem to have adopted Bill Clinton's style of campaigning. What makes this ever more frustrating is that the Bush & Co. are only compounding their problems by doing stupid things like alienating their own base by pandering to Hispanics who by and large will vote democratic no matter how much of Americas sovereignty and wealth Republicans attempt to barter away.

But there is a certain wing of those opposed to illegal immigration who ASSUME that if someone is Hispanic and does not speak English very well, that person is ipso facto an illegal immigrant. Most are and if they aren't they still originally entered the country illegally.

I think Bush would be smart to create an "Amnesty package" that includes better border controls and Visa's being more restrictive. Translation: Lets reward illegal aliens with permanent residency for breaking our laws and lets throw in the some immigrant welfare as an added bonus. Since we know from the past that this will most certainly encourage yet more illegal immigration lets just put out the usual spin about "better border controls and the more restrictions on visas" bit so it will sound more palatable. Of course we wont implement any of these reforms because that would be "anti-immigrant" and the American public will have forgotten about it by then anyway.

I understand what your saying CoolGuy. The problem is that living in Florida I have seen so many people risk their lives to come here (illegally)and become sucessfull contributing citizens who love this country more than I do. There are ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS but we seemed to have become a nation that operates by the exceptions rather than the general rule. I am friends with a number of outstanding citizens who happen to be Hispanic but this no reason to be for open borders and unlimited immigration from the 3rd world.

It already is. Ask some folks in Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Virgina, Utah, New York, etc etc etc. Joe, you can add Illinois to that list also. In the last few years there has been an explosion of illegal immigration througout the greater Chicagoland area that extends almost to the Wisconsin border.

"No, there should be enforcement of the current laws."Hear, hear!
And we can begin by throwing in jail people who employ illegal immigrants, they are the ones encouraging desperate people to break the law.

"58,000 Middle Eastern men from countries other than Israel are residing illegally in the United States". I believe there is more than this living in NJ. I would not be surprised. I wouldn't surprise me if there are at least 50,000 mid eastern illegals in California alone.

To: RedBloodedAmerican The GOP better be carefull. Hispanics are a huge voting block and should not be categorized with terrorists. The reason hispanics tend to vote Democrat is that there is a perception that the GOP is hostile towards them. If Bush wins over the hispanic vote, which he is capable of, Democrats don't stand a chance. We can't lose sight of the big picture. 9 posted on 1/23/02 8:40 AM Pacific by mgist
Republicans tend to be law biding citizens, and they want their representatives to enforce laws on the books. Democrats are none of these.
Many average American members of the GOP are not happy about millions of illegals breaking into the USA, nor are they happy with their leadership when it is willing to look the other way as GOP leaders KISS BUTTS FOR VOTES of aliens given amnesty, and Americans of latin ancestry.
Is this how you run a party? We don't give in just because the country is filled with illegal aliens, and latins that would be offended if immigration laws are enforced.
