Dear Mr. President,
I saw an article from the New York Times yesterday. The following is an excerpt...
White House Shifts on Welfare Law; Food Stamps for Legal Immigrants
By ROBERT PEAR
WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 The Bush administration proposed today to restore food stamps to legal immigrants, whose eligibility for benefits was severely restricted by the 1996 welfare law.
The White House said that in the budget President Bush will send to Congress in early February, at least 363,000 people would qualify for food stamps under a proposal that would cost the federal government $2.1 billion over 10 years.
The proposal, or something like it, has an excellent chance of becoming law. The Senate is considering such changes as part of a far-reaching bill to reauthorize farm and nutrition programs.
I'm writing to convey my profound disappointment at this development.
I voted for you, and I voted for your father. I took my daughter out of school early one day when you came to Burbank for a rally just before the Election. You shook her hand, and she was thrilled. She's now shaken hands with two Presidents, President Reagan being the other. She is proud of that, and I am proud of her.
During the attempted Election theft in Florida, I took my daughter down to the Federal building, where we picketed on your behalf. I emailed every friend I had, making your case, because I was appalled at the way the story of your victory was being muddied by media spin.
You are the first winning Presidential candidate I've ever voted for. I was pleased when you kept your promise and got our tax cut passed. I was less than pleased with your decision on stem cells, and troubled by trial balloons of amnesty for illegal aliens. Still, I remained loyal to you.
Since the attacks of September 11th, I've been mighty proud to have you as our Commander in Chief. I've argued on your behalf with folks whom I didn't feel saw all of the numerous ramifications of taking on terror in a couple of dozen countries. I know the undertaking isn't easy.
As an American and a Republican, I've been chuckling over your high approval ratings. I've very much enjoyed the bewilderment of your, of our, political opponents at your popularity and success.
Which leaves me bewildered by the article I excerpted above.
I've lived in California all of my life, and I don't like the changes taking place in my state.
Our prisons are overflowing, our schools are overcrowded and declining, we have to many gangs and crime, and our taxes are too high in order to pay all of it. Our cities grow increasingly Balkanized and we haven't yet assimilated all of the immigrants that are here now. And every single one of these problems is made worse by the fact that one in ten people in California is an illegal immigrant.
We don't even "need" as many immigrants as we have If we stopped paying citizens not to work, there wouldn't be much of a labor shortage. Yet, coming to California even legally means winning the lottery for many immigrants, as they start taking advantage of American generosity.
My fellow Californians and I tried to do something about it in 1994... We passed, overwhelmingly, Proposition 187. We got tired of our elected officials ignoring our will, and coddling immigrants, both legal and illegal. We are weary of excuses from Washington and Sacramento, telling us why our officials willfully refuse to enforce the laws of our land and protect the sovereignty of our borders. We do not wish to foot the bill for the social services of other countries. We are not Mexico's safety net.
We mean to be listened to.
While we are a nation of immigrants, and their descendents, what has happened to my state in the past 20 years has not been for the betterment of America. Allowing illegal aliens to colonize the United States and giving government handouts to those who immigrate here legally does not reflect the best of America.
It is the death-knell of our culture.
I'll speak for myself, but I don't think I will be alone:
If you grant amnesty to illegals, or if you give food stamps and social services to legal immigrants, you can do it without my vote in 2004.
That's really not asking too much, in my opinion, since by rights the INS ought to be deporting people by the hundreds of thousands, and they simply don't perform their job. All I'm asking, though I hope for more, is that you don't make the problem worse.
With an 80% approval rating, I don't understand why you or anyone in the White House would contemplate leading a surrender on matters of immigration.
But if you do, I will not only not vote for you, I will not vote for any Republican so long as you hold office.
Most politicians take far to lightly the will of the American people in this matter...
I sincerely that you are different.
Reagards
Getting ready for amnesty. Bush and illegals. Finally they will be able to work for cash AND collect the benefits. Hey, their folks at home need the money.
Mr. President, you are breeding disrespect for all laws when you order the federal and local police to ignore the eight to ten million lawbreakers making a mockery of our laws every day.
Bump that.
The above article is about legal immigrants.
Read better.
Reagan on your mind too, huh?
Then they can ALL go on welfare and collect food stamps, housing assistance etc.
Thanks. Hey, would you mind correcting my spelling and grammar the last two lines? Jeepers, what happened there?
perhaps a smart bomb could be directed onto the food stamp building!
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."
Big government prevails.
I mentioned amnesty in my letter.
Now be good and tell everyone you want to see illegals deported.
Food stamps are the lowest form of welfare that we have in the US. The argument for, is that very poor nutition or starvation put these folk at risk for much more devastating and expensive medical needs.
Fraud and waste have been somewhat worked out of the program but not entirely eliminated. My idea would be to apply some conditions to the program such as learning english and job training.IMHO.
I too voted for Bush and the rest of the Republicans last turn. Now, I'm watching very closely to our borders, language and culture. (Savage)
I voted for Bush to defeat Gore and the dumbocrats.
But next time I may have to look at some other options. Issues like this can be pivotal.
