Papers on BioPort found in office of terrorist suspects

LANSING, Mich. (AP) BioPort Corp., the nation's only manufacturer of an anthrax vaccine, confirmed Thursday that information on the company was found in an office in Afghanistan used by two retired nuclear scientists from Pakistan.

The men are being questioned by Pakistani authorities about whether they helped Osama bin Laden make chemical weapons with anthrax.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that an office the men used in the Afghan capital of Kabul contained documents about the history of anthrax and the Pentagon's plans to immunize members of the U.S. military against anthrax.

The documents included a military report describing plans for anthrax vaccine production at BioPort in Lansing.

BioPort spokeswoman Kim Brennen Root said Thursday that the report was a publicly released environmental study completed in 1998, just before BioPort purchased the labs it now owns from the state.

``It would have been accessible through libraries or the Internet,'' Root said. ``It's not unexpected that a sophisticated organization like al-Qaida would be looking for information from several sources.''

Root said the documents were probably used to get information about the military vaccination program. At one time, the military planned to inoculate 2.4 million U.S. troops with BioPort's vaccine, but that program was put on hold because of manufacturing and supply problems at BioPort.

BioPort is hoping the vaccination program will resume after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspects the company's labs in mid-December.

Root said BioPort has no plans to increase security at its labs. National Guard troops have been on the property since early October.

The Pakistani men, Sultan Bashir-ud-Din Mehmood and Abdul Majid, both worked for Pakistan's Atomic Energy Commission until retiring in 1999. They made several trips to Afghanistan and met with bin Laden, but say they were simply doing charity work.

This company is the SOLE producer of the anthrax vaccine for our troops.

They might be the sole producer, but the FDA has not given them any permission to make any vaccine for three or four years.

Here are the pertinent parts from yesterday's NYT related to this:

"The copies of the military paper describing the anthrax immunization program and expansion of anthrax vaccine production in Michigan were all from original documents, not documents downloaded from the Internet. Someone had written a half dozen stars across the top of the Michigan study, suggesting that they found it valuable."

This is of interest because it contradicts what the Bioport spokeswoman says.

Both articles fail to point out that a few years ago, former employees of Bioport STOLE and gave important, original documents that included the fermentation recipe for anthrax, i.e., how to make large quantities of bugs.

We'll be gettin' to the good part soon. It'll be the successor to Bioport that has the real players.

golitely, thanks for the heads up.

So now they have found anthrax lab equipment,Bioport docs and recipies for an OKC style bomb in the Taliban headquarter in Afghanistan! Iraq and Bin laden have been working together for years on these things.

The anthrax lab found was supposed to be making vaccines but there was some question the lab could also be making weapons grade anthrax weapons. Or were they developing vaccines to immunize their terrorist distributors of weaponized anthrax? How much of this technology was passed to the Taliban by the wrong Saudis who may have been connected to Bioport and othe US anthrax companies funded/owned by the Saudi's? Betty Jo has been justifiably railing about this for months on FreeRepublic, and this tends to vindicate her concerns even more.

Also there is a story about Atta (hijacker pilot who met with the Iraqi intell boys before 9/11 and may have obtained and distributred anthrax in the US) on FR today saying Atta and some ME men frequented a Medical Center in Florida and used their computers (nurse told this to the FBI).

Given the anthrax cases in Florida and Atta's access to medical facilities, I worry that some sympathetic Muslim doctors with US citizenship could be helping ME terrorists in the US distribute bioweapons and also protect ME terrorists handling them. This may have come up another time in the Texas area with some other suspected hijackers($20K and box cutters, scheduled on a New Jersey American airliner grounded on 9/11) who were pulled off a train while enroute to visit one of their ME doctor friends near San Antonio.

could the 4th source be producing the "US" strain?
could the New Science piece be leading us away from the 4th source?

"Peter Fu, a toxicology expert at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s research facility on the grounds of the Pine Bluff military arsenal in Arkansas" Government funded laboratories complex, nationwide, obsessed with zero tolerance for anybody who would dare take security steps, THEN, to discriminatingly observe security measures.

If you want to keep your job, look the other way whenever a "protected minority" wanders about un-checked. Thank Clinton-dom's political correctness.

FYI:

According to the FBI summaries, Trie said Fu and his wife, Violetta, were “silent partners” in the formation of Trie’s Daihatsu International Trading Inc. and invested thousands of dollars in start-up capital. According to government sources who have seen Trie’s full FBI interviews, the Fu’s gave Trie $40,000 in “start-up capital” for this joint venture.

In fact, Fu tells Insight in an exclusive interview that he was not a “partner” with Trie and did not invest money in Daihatsu, per se. But he admits that he and his wife lent the Tries $40,000 as a favor and that the loan was repaid. At the same time, Fu acknowledges that the registered mailing address for Daihatsu was Fu’s home in Little Rock, Ark. “At that time [December 1991], Charlie’s wife and my wife tried to open a company,” Fu tells Insight. Mrs. Fu quit the business after a few weeks, Fu says. “Violetta felt she was incapable of handling the business because of lack of experience and lack of language ability.” He says he is not aware of any business conducted by Daihatsu or United Biotech, another trading company registered by Trie during the 1992 presidential campaign season.

Not China, but as long as we're talking about the Clinton administration, how did Bioport get the contract to produce the anthrax vaccine for our troops?

Anthrax Vaccine Crowe British

From: How Bioport Finds the Admiral

According to Coupe, when Crowe returned from England in 1997, he was approached by Fuad El-Hibri's father, Ibrahim El-Hibri. The elder El-Hibri, whom the admiral had met a decade before, invited Crowe to serve on the board of Intervac.

"The admiral is commonly referred to as the person who bought this," says Coupe, "and while I don't want to minimize his involvement, he's had no financial involvement either way - giving or getting any money."

Another 30 percent of Intervac shares are owned by Nancy El-Hibri, a mother and homemaker in suburban Maryland and the rest of the company is in the hands of "I&F Holdings," a company directed by Nancy El-Hibri's father-in-law, Ibrahim El-Hibri, a Venezuelan citizen, and her husband, Fuad El-Hibri, a German citizen of Lebanese descent.

Fuad El-Hibri appears to be the real day-to-day director of Intervac and is listed by Dun & Bradstreet as the "chief executive" of Bioport. Mrs. El-Hibri laughed when questioned by a reporter for ABC about Intervac and referred the network to her husband who did not return a call.

Experts in defense policy suggested that the Pentagon would be highly unlikely to approve the sale to a foreign national of a company that is the sole manufacturer of a vaccine considered vital to national security. Coupe says that Crowe's ownership of Intervac stock gives him a 13 percent share of Bioport. The only US company given the anthrax vaccine contract. Crowe - a friend of Bill.

(Trie) He also confessed to orchestrating the sale of a 500-liter (130-gallon) medical fermentation device to a pharmaceutical plant in China suspected of manufacturing chemical and biological agents for military purposes.

The evidence of the fermenting machine’s sale and transfer sometime in 1993 to the Changchun Biological Products Institute is alarming, according to Leitner, given that the Chinese facility has been flagged by some experts as a biological-weapons laboratory run by the People’s Liberation Army.

The 500-liter fermentation tank transferred to the Changchun facility would be prohibited for sale by the Department of Defense’s Militarily Critical Technologies List because it allows the manufacture of large quantities of biological agents, such as botulism or anthrax bacteria the transfer of the highly sophisticated pharmaceutical-grade fermenting machine poses significant risks to U.S. security at home and abroad if used to make advanced germ-warfare products such as anthrax and botulism.

Here we have an FDA guy who is head of the toxicology branch of his lab, who gives Trie $40,000 and gets introduced to the manager of a bioweapons program in China. They gave direct assistance to a biological-weapons program, and the FBI did not follow up.

You don't see the relevance to today's international situation or the Clinton administration's culpability here? We must be reading different articles.

Thank you for this excellent update BDD--this is wonderful news. Bit by bit, the good guys are starting to make some headway. I wasn't aware of the connection between the robbery covered on Channel 5 and the OKC bombing, although I do remember going "hmmmm" when they mentioned the name "Kahlil." I also noted how odd it was that two of them were obviously Arabs, and not Black Muslims--so I'm not too quick on the uptake this week--maybe too much Thanksgiving turkey?

Thinden, Backhoe and all--thanks for the additional info that you've posted--Energizer, thanks also to you for finding this article!

Gee. Wasn't it the New York Times that published as "news" a week ago, unfounded suspicions of well-established leftists that the anthrax attacks in the US must have come from "domestic" terrorists? I wonder how the editors of the Times managed to square that with the finding of anthrax vacine information in an office in Afgthanistan used by Pakistani scientists?

How in the world did those evil, right-wing Americans get access to that office in Afghanistan? Huh?

I guess the editors of the Times must not bother to read their own paper. Or possibly, like most of us, they read it occasionally but do not take it seriously. What's your guess?
