When Heinz Richter visits the Olympus Dive Center in Morehead City, he talks personally about a wreck site that brings many divers to the area.
But he stops short of taking the dive with them.
Richter's last trip to the ocean's bottom was 65 years ago today, when the German U-boat on which he served was sunk off the coast of North Carolina. He isn't interested in going back.
"One dive was enough for me," Richter chuckled.

Sunken warships are considered the property of the country they fought for, and are considered war memorials and military cemeteries. They shouldn’t be “explored”.

I probably have about $50 worth of bottom rigs stuck on that boat. Lotsa big sea bass, though.
they have pulled it down, searched around the jd news this morn and its flat out gone.... if you go back and search the paper for u boat you can turn up a couple article about it at the nc aquarium and german spies being put ashore on topsail
guess that why it is such a popular diving area.......
