U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

WWII Propaganda Movies

How many of these have you seen and which is a favorite of yours or your least favorite. All comments are welcome.

As for me, I'm going to have to make a list from this list and get myself to the library. I've got some more movie watching to do!

Aventure Malgache (1944)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock. This film (along with Bon Voyage) was made by Hitchcock during WW II at the request of the British government. When viewed by government officials they decided that the films were inflammatory and withheld them from distribution. Aventure Malgache, is set in Vichy-controlled Madagascar where the Resistance leader battles to keep his island free.

Back to Bataan (1945)

Directed by Edward Dmytryk. Cast: John Wayne, Anthony Quinn, Beulah Bondi, Richard Loo, Philip Ahn, Lawrence Tierney, Paul Fix, Abner Biberman, Vladimir Sokoloff. After the fall of the Phillipines in WWII, colonel Joseph Maden of the U.S. Army stays on to organize guerrilla fighters against the conquerors.

Bataan (1943)

Director: Tay Garnett. A realistic motion picture written in a documentary style about a small band of American soldiers who attempt to destroy a strategic bridge during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in 1942.

Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

Director: William Wyler. Three returning WWII veterans face problems as they attempt to pick up the threads of their previous lives. Captain Derry is returning to a loveless marriage, Sergeant Stephenson is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him, and sailor Parrish is tormented by the loss of his hands.

Bon Voyage (1944)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock. This film (along with Aventure Malgache) was made by Hitchcock during WW II at the request of the British government. When viewed by government officials they decided that the films were inflammatory and withheld them from distribution. The first, Bon Voyage, is about an RAF pilot who has escaped from a POW camp and made his way back to London with the help of the French resistance.

Contraband (1940)

Director: Michael Powell; featuring Conrad Veidt, Valerie Hobson, Hay Petrie, Joss Ambler, Raymond Lovell, Esmond Knight, Charles Victor, Phoebe Kershaw, Harold Warrender. Set in England during the early days of World War II, a Danish sea captain and his passenger are kidnapped by a cell of Nazi spies operating from a basement in London's Soho. The plot progresses as a chase that puts the characters in one peculiar set of surroundings after another. Most of the story takes place under blackout conditions, in which the great city becomes a mysterious dark labyrinth.

Destination Tokyo (1943)

Director: Delmer Daves. Twenty-four hours out of San Francisco, submarine captain Cassidy unseals his top-secret orders and reads two fateful words: Destination Tokyo. This is a powerful and sometimes humorous portrait of American submarine service men during WWII. Its also a suspense drama as Japanese Zeros rain death and Cassidy must somehow slip his sub through the mines of Tokyo Bay and then blast his way out to the safety of the open seas.

Flying Tigers (1942)

Director: David Miller. Based upon the true story of the American pilots known as "The Flying Tigers" who fought the Japanese over China in early World War II.

Gung Ho! (1943)

Director: Ray Enright. A dramatization of the true adventures of Colonel Evans Carlson and the two hundred men of the Marine Raider Battalion who embarked on a death-defying mission to take Makin Island in the Pacific, on August 17th, 1942. This raid was one of the early major American victories of World War II.

Hangmen Also Die (1943)

Director: Fritz Lang. Fictionalized account of a man who assassinates Reinhard Heydrich, a top Nazi official, and of his interaction with the townspeople in Prague.

Hitler's Madman (1943)

Directed by Douglas Sirk. Cast: Patricia Morison, John Carradine, Alan Curtis, Howard Freeman, Ralph Morgan, Ava Gardner. A dramatization of the assassination by Czech partisans of Reinhard Heydrich, Nazi SS commander, and the reprisals inflicted by the Nazis on the Czechs.

In Which We Serve (1942)

Director: Noel Coward; featuring Noel Coward, John Mills, Bernard Miles, Celia Johnson, Michael Wilding, Richard Attenborough, Daniel Massey, Juliet Mills. When the British destroyer H.M.S. Torrin is torpedoed in WWII, a small lifeboat of survivors cling to their memories and their courage in this spellbinding tribute to the human spirit which is based on true events. As told through flashback as they dodge enemy fire and pray for rescue, the survivors remember their loved ones left behind and shipmates who once stood beside them as they recall the ship's war-time career.

Lifeboat (1944)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock. When an American vessel is torpedoed during WWII, eight survivors find refuge in a tiny lifeboat. Hopelessly short on food and water, their situation is further complicated when they rescue a crew member from the very sub that sank their ship. Given the helm because he's the most capable sailor aboard, the passengers wonder if he is a savior steering them towards rescue, or their sworn enemy, delivering them into the arms of his fellow Nazis.

Objective, Burma! (1945)

Director: Raoul Walsh. After a group of paratroopers are dropped into the Burmese jungle to destroy a Japanese radar station, they must make their way back through 200 miles of jungles and swamps while avoiding enemy soldiers.

Since You Went Away (1944)

Director: John Cromwell. Story of a family during World War II. While her husband is off at war, Anne struggles to be strong for her two daughters. Because money is tight, they take in a boarder and his grandson, and must deal with all sorts of problems trying to keep their spirits up.

So Proudly We Hail! (1943)

Director: Mark Sandrich. A film crafted to tell the true story of American Army nurses who served so gallantly in World War II. From the first casualties of Pearl Harbor to the time they are shipped home, these women work tirelessly to treat the wounded and boost morale. The story traces friendships, hardships and the love that keeps them going in the face of continuous heartbreak.

The Story of G.I. Joe (1945)

Director: William Wellman. Featuring Robert Mitchum, Burgess Meredith, Freddie Steele, Wally Cassell, Dorothy Coonan, William "Billy" Benedict. A gripping World War II drama based upon the newspaper columns of Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Pyle joins Company C, 18th Infantry as this American army unit fights its way across North Africa and then catches up with the unit again in Italy and accompanies it through the battles of San Vittorio and Cassino. He learns from its commanding officer the loneliness of command and from the individual G.I.'s of the human capacity to survive drudgery, discomfort and the terror of combat. The film is acknowledged as one of greatest war pictures ever made, portraying an unsentimental story of mud, blood and death.

They were Expendable (1945)

Director: John Ford. Featuring Robert Montgomery, John Wayne, Donna Reed, Jack Holt, Ward Bond. In the early days of World War II, the Japanese navy pressed relentlessly into the Philippines. Two American skippers are determined to prove that their small PT boats can be shaped into an effective battle fleet against the larger Japanese cruisers.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944)

Director: Mervyn LeRoy. A classic World War II thriller - the true life story of the first American air raids on Japan. Spencer Tracy plays Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, the tough and inspiring mastermind of the historic crew of the "Ruptured Duck," commanded by Captain Ted Lawson. Lawson's daydreams of the bride he left behind are intertwined with the nightmarish terrors of a tense Pacific crossing, thunderous bombings, and the fate of his men on their painful odyssey through mainland China.

'Toons at War! (War-Time Cartoons)

Director: Warner Bros., et al. Videocassette release of three advertisements and fifteen cartoon shows produced mainly by Warner Bros. between 1941 and 1943 to promote support for the war effort. Film about newly-trained pilots in World War II aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier after the attack on Pearl Harbor and their frustrations with their by-the-book leader and the plans of the U.S. naval leaders to lull the Japanese into a false sense of superiority. Against all odds, the men fly into action in the decisive Battle of Midway. Includes actual combat footage.

Veterans for Constitution Restoration is a non-profit, non-partisan educational and grassroots activist organization.

Actively seeking volunteers to provide this valuable service to Veterans and their families.

Thanks to quietolong for providing this link.

We here at Blue Stars For A Safe Return are working hard to honor all of our military, past and present, and their families. Inlcuding the veterans, and POW/MIA's. I feel that not enough is done to recognize the past efforts of the veterans, and remember those who have never been found.

I realized that our Veterans have no "official" seal, so we created one as part of that recognition. To see what it looks like and the Star that we have dedicated to you, the Veteran, please check out our site.

COLONY OF SUPER-EVOLVED MICROBES HAS TINY KINGDOM IN TED KENNEDY'S BUTT

By MICHAEL CHIRON

AGING Sen. Ted Kennedy's droopy "geezer butt" is NOT just the object of crude and ribald jokes on the floor of the U.S. Senate -- it houses a colony of superevolved microbes that have developed a high level of civilization!

That's the way-out theory of a scientist who says it's "imperative" that researchers get to the bottom of the matter.

"These intelligent microorganisms are infinitesimally small, but their tiny kingdom rivals anything mankind has created," declares Dr. Werner Hauptman of New York City. "We must extensively probe Mr. Kennedy's buttocks and alimentary canal."

Dr. Hauptman, a staunch supporter of President George Bush's conservative social and political agendas -- is eager to examine the ultra liberal senator personally.

"CAT scans are essential, but I'd like to begin with a thorough manual exam," he says, snapping the fingers of what his colleagues call "the ever-present rubber glove" that the expert keeps in his shirt pocket.

Dr. Hauptman's pioneering work in mitochondrial DNA in the 1980s established him as one of the world's premiere microbiologists. But for the last two years, his obsession has been Kennedy's ample but saggy caboose -- leading peers to label him "a crackpot."

While the scientist concedes he has no proof that super intelligent bugs reside within the senator's booty, he describes the circumstantial evidence as overwhelming.

"It's a little-known fact that in the early 1990s, researchers affiliated with Columbia University conducted a government funded experiment aimed at accelerating a microbe's evolution," he reveals.

"They had remarkable success -- each generation of the strain, dubbed AN-167 -- was more sophisticated than the last. "Within eight months, the microbes were reportedly using tools, constructing microscopic aqueducts and even beginning to communicate with the researchers using telepathy. "Unfortunately, the microbes were evolving so fast, the National Science Foundation feared they might someday conquer the world and ordered the sample destroyed." Later, NSF investigators discovered that the microbes had contaminated an adjoining lab where new silicone butt implants were being developed, Dr. Hauptman claims.

"According to investigators, one pair of the experimental implants were placed in the rear end of an liberal senator from Massachusetts who was convinced that a younger-looking heinie would make him more attractive to the ladies," says the expert.

"The investigators' notes don't identify the senator by name, but the only other liberal senator from Massachusetts is John Kerry, and as far as I know, the only cosmetic surgery he's ever had was all those Botox injections that paralyzed his face while he was running for president.

"On the other hand, Sen. Kennedy's butt implants are the worst-kept secret in Washington," says Hauptmann. "They didn't do much for his physique, but everybody knows he got them."

Dr. Hauptman has written Kennedy, requesting permission to examine his scientifically-important rump.

"The microbes have been evolving for a decade -- we can only imagine how advanced they are now," he says. "I wish to begin by attempting to establish telepathic contact."

Beltway insiders doubt that Kennedy would sit still for a probe of his fanny, let alone a bizarre "mind-meld."

"This nut belongs in a loony bin," snorts a highly-placed Kennedy aide. "There's no way Teddy's going to drop his boxers and bend over for any Republican, much less an egghead with an ax to grind."

Thought for the day :
"It is not what we have that will make us a great nation; it is the way in which we use it."

Have A Great Day!

Read:
Psalm 118

This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. -Psalm 118:24

Bible In One Year: Proverbs 12-14

cover I was in a convenience store one day, standing in line behind a man paying for his groceries. When he was finished, the clerk sent him off with a cheery "Have a great day!"

To the clerk's surprise (and mine) the man exploded in anger. "This is one of the worst days of my life," he shouted. "How can I have a great day?" And with that he stormed out of the store.

I understand the man's frustration; I too have "bad" days over which I have no control. How can I have a great day, I ask myself, when it's beyond my control? Then I remember these words: "This is the day the Lord has made" (Psalm 118:24).

The Lord has made every day, and my Father will show Himself strong on my behalf today. He has control over everything in it-even the hard things that will come my way. All events have been screened through His wisdom and love, and they are opportunities for me to grow in faith. "His mercy endures forever" (v.1). "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear" (v.6).

Now, when people give me the parting admonition to have a great day, I reply, "That's beyond my control, but I can be grateful for whatever comes my way, and rejoice-for this is the day the Lord has made." -David Roper

When dawn announces each new day,
Before you rise up out of bed,
Rejoice-be glad and give God praise,
And thank Him for what lies ahead. -Sper

A smile is a curve that can set things straight.

Morning Snippy.

See you at the Lions Meeting in a bit.

Saw most of the movies mentioned, Best Years of Our Lives" is excellent and a tear jerker.

Two more for the list are:

"Wake Island" (1942)

In November 1941, Major Caton takes command of the small Marine garrison on Wake Island. His tendency toward spit and polish upsets the men's tropical lassitude, but Pearl Harbor changes everything. Soon the island is attacked and the Marines pull together day by day; but how long can they hold out?

and

"The Fighting Sullivans" (1944)

The wartime forerunner of the story told in Saving Private Ryan (1998) is this emotionally gripping depiction of the Sullivan boys of Waterloo, Iowa. Amid all the tales of personal tragedy in WW II, this one stands out. The five inseparable brothers enlisted together after Pearl Harbor and were all assigned to a battleship that ended up at Guadalcanal--where all five brothers died in action. A moving tribute to those who gave their lives in the last world war.

I dare you to not shed a tear at the end.

Since we will close on the 4th of July we should check out about 5 or 6 of these and have our own WWII movie marathon for our day off!

Didn't see Bergman and Bogie in "Casablanca". The greatest propaganda film of all time.

Ah, Casablanca. We've used that film so much at the Foxhole who could ever forget. A true classic.

Despite the good times had in Paris, happily-ever-after was not meant to be just yet. The Nazis march into Paris, and Rick and Ilsa make plans to flee.

"Desparate Journey" (1942)

Five Allied airmen shot down in Germany fight their way back to England. Reagan kicks some butt in this propoganda-studded war flick. Academy Award Nominations: Best Special Effects.

This one is a "fun" one, Reagan is good.

You forgot the movie that saved my uncle's life.

As bad as it is, we love that movie.

Morning!

Everybody awake? :-)

Gee, I was surprised as I read the list that I've actually seen about half those films. A good surprise. Lots I haven't seen though and I think I'll have to make it a point to see the rest when I have an opportunity.

I liked Back to Bataan, The Flying Tigers and They Were Expendable I guess the best. Like John Wayne. Seems like there were some other good WW2 films too. Maybe they weren't "propaganda." But, Casablanca did it for me!

Rick to Ilsa: ...I've got a job to do, too. Where I'm going you can't follow. What I've got to do you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. ...
