The 600,000 Souls of All Israel Found in the First Letter of the Torah
Bible, Talmud, misc. | December 10, 2023 | Ezekiel, various

... along with Moses' specific time ("about midnight") for the time of the Exodus.

Backgound:

On a mystical level, the number 600,000 is identified with the number of souls comprising the Nation of Israel. The Talmud teaches that the arrival of the Messiah will transpire when all these souls are "complete."

The Nation of Israel

We know that the Torah actually has 304,805 letters, so why would our Sages say it has 600,000? [And even prove it by saying “Israel” (ישראל) stands for yesh shishim ribua otiot l’Torah (יש שישים ריבוא אותיות לתורה), “There are 600,000 letters in the Torah.”] The answer, as is well-known, is that the Heavenly Torah has 600,000 “spiritual” letters, written as “black fire on white fire”. The 600,000 spiritual letters parallel the 600,000 spiritual roots of the Jewish people.

The Torah ends with all Israel:

Deu 34
10. And there has not arisen since in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face:
11. In all the signs and the wonders, which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land:
12. And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great and awesome deeds which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel:

By way of a letter-shape analogy, the end of the long exile and beginning of the Messianic Era is described as a change to the first letter of the Torah:

We discussed earlier that the three lines of the letter beis -- two horizontal and one vertical -- represent three directions (or corners) of the earth. The north side, that which is open to evil, remains unresolved. With the arrival of Mashiach, the fourth side of the beis of Bereishis -- Creation -- is completed and the letter beis is transformed into a mem.24

***

ב: bet (beis), "house"
מ ם: mem, "water"

The regular value of a letter mem is 40, but the final form of the letter [ם] has a value of 600. (The extended values of the 5 final letter forms are not used for normal counting procedures; e.g. "600" is represented by a tav + resh, 400 + 200.)

ב = 2
ם = 600

The "beis" of Bereishis -- the first letter of the Torah -- writ large:

The physical size is analogous to the letter values being enlarged to represent thousands (e.g. in Hebrew year dates, the letter hei -- ה -- is used for 5,000. The current year 5784: ה'תשפ"ד).

ב
= 2

= 2,000

Through that pattern-concept, when the big bet (the big house) of Bereshith (2,000) is transformed into the big final mem (an enarged final mem), the 600 value is 600,000.

"With the arrival of Mashiach, the fourth side of the beis of Bereishis -- Creation -- is completed and the letter beis is transformed into a mem."

ם
= 600

= 600,000

"On a mystical level, the number 600,000 is identified with the number of souls comprising the Nation of Israel. The Talmud teaches that the arrival of the Messiah will transpire when all these souls are 'complete'."

To continue,

ב
= 2

ם
= 600

The difference = 598, which *is* "about midnight" [כַּחֲצֹת הַלַּיְלָה, Exo 11:4, = 598].

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_number

The Gemara asks: Did David know exactly when it was midnight? Even Moses our teacher did not know exactly when it was midnight. How do we know this about Moses? As it is written that he said to Pharaoh: "Thus said the Lord: About midnight, I will go out into the midst of Egypt" (Exodus 11:4). The word about indicates that it was only an approximation.

>>>

David had a sign indicating when it was midnight. As Rav Aha bar Bizna said that Rabbi Shimon Hasida said: A lyre hung over David's bed, and once midnight arrived, the northern midnight wind would come and cause the lyre to play on its own. David would immediately rise from his bed and study Torah until the first rays of dawn.

The invisible "fourth wall" is the open side of the house [ב], the audience (the ones doing the observing):

"Typical stage, fourth wall being the house."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_wall

With the arrival of Mashiach, the fourth side of the beis of Bereishis -- Creation -- is completed and...

"On a mystical level, the number 600,000 is identified with the number of souls comprising the Nation of Israel. The Talmud teaches that the arrival of the Messiah will transpire when all these souls are 'complete'."

Endings and beginnings:

In 24-hour time, midnight is both 2400 and 0000, depending on context -- the end of the day, or the beginning.

The Torah ends with the 54th parsha, on "all Israel". The Torah begins with the 1st parsha, with the enlarged bet of Bereshith, "in the beginning". 54 joins to 1 (541 = "Israel") on Simchat Torah

“Israel” (ישראל) stands for yesh shishim ribua otiot l’Torah (יש שישים ריבוא אותיות לתורה), “There are 600,000 letters in the Torah.”

And...

The Talmud teaches that the arrival of the Messiah will transpire when all these souls are "complete."

ם

In the commentaries regarding the letter forms, I've never seen the final mem described as a dalet [ד] welded to a resh [ר]. Yet, that's exactly what it is.

David + Rachel [ד + ר]:

Although David is from the tribe of Judah the son of Leah, Rachel is his spiritual soul-root.
