“Charles was one of twenty-two Ugandan martyrs who converted from paganism. He was baptized November 1885, a year before his death, and became a moral leader. He was the chief of the royal pages and was considered the strongest athlete of the court. He was also known as “the most handsome man of the Kingdom of the Uganda.” He instructed his friends in the Catholic Faith and he personally baptized boy pages.

“He inspired and encouraged his companions to remain chaste and faithful. He protected his companions, ages 13-30, from the immoral acts and homosexual demands of the Babandan ruler, Mwanga.

“Mwanga was a superstitious pagan king who originally was tolerant of Catholicism. However, his chief assistant, Katikiro, slowly convinced him that Christians were a threat to his rule. The premise was if these Christians would not bow to him, nor make sacrifices to their pagan god, nor pillage, massacre, nor make war, what would happen if his whole kingdom converted to Catholicism?

“When Charles was sentenced to death, he seemed very peaceful, one might even say, cheerful. He was to be executed by being burned to death. While the pyre was being prepared, he asked to be untied so that he could arrange the sticks. He then lay down upon them. When the executioner said that Charles would be burned slowly to death, Charles replied by saying that he was very glad to be dying for the True Faith. He made no cry of pain but just twisted and moaned, “Katonda! (O my God!).” He was burned to death by Mwanga’s order on this day, June 3, 1886. Charles is the Patron of the African Youth of Catholic Action. The photograph below of the men was taken a year before their martyrdom. St. Charles......

Three guys are captured by a tribe of natives in a far off land. They are brought before the tribal leader who gives them a choice. He says, “what will you have, death or bunga?”. The first guys thinks, hmmm wonder what bunga is. “I’ll take the bunga”. The tribal leader says, “good”. Then a dozen tribal members line up and give it to him in the rear. The tribal leader turns to the second guy and gives him the choice, death, or bunga. The second guy thinks, hmm, that bunga thing is pretty nasty. But death is permanent, “I’ll take the bunga”. Tribal leader says, “good”, and a hundred tribesmen line up and give him the bunga. The tribal leader gives the choice to the third captive. He thinks a while, hmm, first it was a dozen, then it was a hundred, I don’t know man. Heck with it, “I’ll take death”. The tribal leader says, “good, death .... by bunga”.

Headline doesn’t match the article.

More research is required.

A quick Google search indicates that, while the king was a sexual deviant with strong pedophilic desires and resented the Catholics for refusing to engage in his “entertainment”, St. Charles was executed for refusing to renounce his Christian faith.

I have a 3rd class relic of St. Charles Lwanga. It was given to me by the family of an elderly woman after she died. I took Communion to her for three years and they were no longer practicing Catholics.

They also gave me the rosary her priest brother gave her on her 1st Communion in 1930 and a small crucifix in a box her other priest brother used when he said Mass in the field during WWII.

I was happy to get these precious articles of the faith but sad they didn’t know or care about their significance.

Why were you bringing Communion to a non-practicing Catholic?

This is why Uganda passes laws against homosexuality. They have a sordid history!

But Ted (#LGBTQI) Cruz excoriates Uganda for their stand against Sodomy!?!
