Is Genesis the “true” story? Don’t know. Don’t really care.
I've read where the Great Flood account in the Bible roughly correlates with a theory that a land bridge across the Straits of Gibraltar collapsing and flooded the Mediterranean Sea, wiping out numerous settlements and accounting for the relics found under the Med.
And the Genesis story in the Bible roughly tracks with the "Big Bang Theory" of physics of a universe created out of nothing.
If you accept those two concepts, then all we're left with is quibbling about the embellished details of the stories.
Lord, Here Comes The Flood.
Also "roughly tracks" with any of dozens other Creation Myths.
Regards,

Aptly put. Thank you.
Gen 2
And the earth(776) was(1961) without form,(8414)and void;(922)
Strong’s Concordance calls out the word “was” in their translation of Hebrew number 1961 as “became” - I look at that as perhaps the first recorded concept of an extinction event taking place. Perhaps those early orators had concepts of great cataclysmic cycles of dynamic events that altered the planet before their time. Only later would more discovery follow that yielded additional clarity to the scope of the science of earths history.
Geologically speaking and biblically presented as “the rocks cried out.”
Ah, but it is even more subtle that. (See the text under my FreeRepublic name). Genesis has the complete sequence of Earth’s creation and evolution from the Big Bang through the formation of the seas and continents, to the creation of plants, the atmosphere, and the development of dinosaurs (birds), and then mammals and then Man.
The best theory of the great flood encompassing the entire Earth is from Dr. Walt Brown at creationscience.com.
