As a church musician, I feel constrained to point out that it is perfectly licit to sing Gregorian chant in the "new mass". In fact, there is a proper introit, gradual, alleluia/tract, offertory, and communion for every Sunday and holy day in the new calendar.

The rubrics and Vatican II itself make it clear that Gregorian chant is the preferred music for Mass; other music is allowed by way of concession, not mandate.

Don't blame the "new mass" for what is really (a) lousy musical taste among pastors and the faithful generally; and (b) a cowardly fear of doing anything different than St Anesthesia's down the street.

Good points. But it does not matter what’s “officially preferred” in some document, if it rarely actually happens in a church. EWTN’s mass nicely incorporates many of the parts you mention. Yesterday the priest also sang the Gospel. Of course, they do have outstanding musicians.
