[Catholic Caucus] Vatican Attacks Latin Mass In Letter To all Bishops

Archbishop Arthur Roche, the anti-Catholic Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship, who has been sidelining now retired Cardinal Sarah, has launched an attack on the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM).

UnaVoceScotland.org (February 21) published the English translation of a February 19, 2020 essay written by Roche which was forwarded to all bishops.

The essay makes the unlikely claim that the New Mass is an "authentic development" of the Roman Rite, and calls its implementation an "ecclesiastical duty" - although nobody follows the Novus Ordo which is only used as an excuse for empty liturgical experiments.

Roche tells the joke that the Novus Ordo contains “more sacrificial vocabulary than was the case in the 1570 Missal” while the TLM needed to be stripped of alleged "repetitions" and "accretions.”

He believes that the introduction of the Novus Ordo was necessary due to the reception of the "theological content" of Vatican II which was aware of "a world that had changed.” However, Vatican II was only a pastoral council, and the "world that had changed" had little use for the Novus Ordo.

Roche criticises a solely "clerical vision" of the liturgy, in which the "clergy alone" are active and the faithful "passive" and where the “priest alone" celebrates. This reflects nicely the Novus Ordo reality, e.g. funerals and weddings, were the priest talks to himself because the audience doesn't even know the most basic liturgical replies.

With all the overwrought allegiance to Vatican II, why don't they note that the vernacular was "an allowed exception" to the Latin Mass?

It was NOT an order to prefer the vernacular!!!!

I remember, way back, when the Vatican was actually Catholic.
Now it’s Gaytholic.

"Authentic developments" of liturgy aren't wholesale rewrites produced by a committee over a ~5 year period.

and calls its implementation an "ecclesiastical duty"

I thought it was "implemented" in 1970. Sounds like someone is running scared.

The funny thing is that almost no parishes (at least in the US) actually implement the 1970 MR as envisioned by Vatican II*, and those that do are sometimes the target of more abuse and opprobrium than TLM parishes.

*Vatican II never envisioned the abolition of ad orientem, and encouraged the use of Latin in the liturgy, including the singing of Latin Mass ordinaries by the people. Every day on the 1970 MR calendar has Latin proper chants assigned in the 1974 Graduale Romanum. Show of hands: how many FR Catholics who attend the Novus Ordo have ever heard them sung at their parish church?

Catholics never were very good singers. And now that reading music has been criminalized, it’s worse.

We have a conservative young pastor at our traditional little country church and in the last couple years he has implemented Latin chants and ad orientum worship. A few people have stopped attending but they were more than replaced, largely by young families. Even with Covid restrictions on seating I think there are more people at Sunday mass than when we started going 3 years ago. We have to get there early to make sure we can sit in a pew.

Unfortunately for him the diocese is short on priests and the primary parish he is assigned to is much more modern in design and mindset. That community is at the edge of the sprawl from the city and has been taken over by wealthy people wanting country homes. He seems very hurt and stressed by the clashes he has there and wishes he could devote himself entirely to our parish.

two question survey:

1) Which is better? The Traditional Latin Mass or the New Mass?

2) Which is better? The Traditional Latin Mass or the New Pope?

Bergoglio hates the Mass of the ages. Novus Ordo Mass that came out of the confusion that was the disasterous Vatican II is not Catholic. It’s the mass of Communists and queers.
